Cheap rear wheel

Posted on
  • Were can I get a cheap fixed rear wheel. It is going to be used on a tester bike for my girlfriend as she is considering making the switch. I don't care about what it looks like as long as it is true and cheap. Any help?

  • Awesome, thanks

  • that hub's only for single speed, it's not for fixed since it hasn't got a lockring thread. potentially very dangerous i don't think you want to get your girlfriend injured! it has also got 40holes which won't go with the open sport rim.

    get this one instead:
    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Sovus-36-hole-Sovus-Double-sided-Gear-Fixed-hub-with-Nutted-axle--110mm-OLN--Overall-axle-length-152mm-499.htm

either add a fiver and get them space it to 120 for you or just get spacers from your LBS and do it yourself.

  • Spokes???

  • oh yeah, we're asking arup to commit to performing a miracle here :P

  • oh. and rim tape too.

  • Don't rim the tape.

Veloplugs rock, and you won't get arrested.

is that double fixed or fixed/single? i, too, am looking for a cheap rear wheel for the girlfriend. also a cheap front wheel, now that i think of it...

  • Looks like a pretty good deal. Where's the best place to buy good cheap rims?

  • how cheap you want todd? open sport for £17 there's a link up there. i dont know anything else decent that's cheaper than that, apart from steel rims ;)

flip, i'm not sure about that i'm thinking of buying one for a dirt cheap conversion as well. from the picture it looks like fixed/single. if that's the case i wont buy it because i want fixed/fixed for a polo bike - silly gear for riding to brick lane, even sillier gear for playing.

  • kowalski Veloplugs rock, and you won't get arrested.

Do you know anyone in the UK that imports them? I'd like to use them, but the postage from the US is pretty prohibitive.

Quick search. First place I looked at. Shipping from Germany.

  • You could build a reasonable one rather than a total cheapie and then use it as a spare for yourself if she doesn't end up using it..

  • yeaah i need to do this for my lady
i though it a great reason to make some new wheels from myself but its taking so long, i think i need to get a cheapish one built quick sharp

Remember this hub is 110 mm old. Soem old track frames are 110 but most are 120 mm so you would have to space it out.

  • http://www.kiwicycles.com/ does a very cheap wheelset.

the cfx rims are pretty decent as well.

    Formula/CFX

Single-sided hub wheel-set in black or silver

    £75:00.

  • How about this:

    [ulist]
    [li]the cheap sovus from sjs respaced - £30 ish[/li]
[li]36 hole rim sourced via ebay - £10 (you may have to buy a pair and sell one)[/li]
    [li]36 spokes at 30p each - £10.80, again from sjs[/li]
    [li]rim tape - 99p or use masking tape[/li]
    [li]putting the bits together - only £10 by me[/li]
[li]oh yeah, forgot about postage from sjs, which will be about a fiver[/li]
    [li]TOTAL - about £65[/li]
    [/ulist]

Sounds a lot, so where could you cut costs? You'd be hard pushed to get a hub cheaper than that. Plus they will respace it to the exact size that you need, which saves you lots of bother. It's not a great hub, but does the job. You can use the rim off an old wheel out of a skip or something, if it has 36 holes, but the rim does take a lot of stress and could look like a pringle once you get the old spokes off. Better to use a new one. If you fish around on ebay you will have to wait till something comes up. It's a shame you can't use old spokes as that would bring the cost down, but they need to be of the correct length. You see spokes in packs of a 100 going on ebay sometimes, so again it's a waiting game.

Maybe sjs would do a deal if a few people wanted hubs and you bought a load in bulk. I have seen cheap parts on the US ebay, but then once you add the postage it works out the same anyway. Still, worth a look.

  • I saw a shop selling spokes for 18p each, didn't look too bad. I'll be damned if I can remember where it was though.

  • Definately check out cyclebasket. I've used them in the past for cheap tektro stuff, but i got a 36h open pro for £25ish and a wicked double fixed trach hub for £22 (zenith, identical to iro and formula). Aci SSDB spokes are CHEAP there too! I'll let you know how it rides when i finally get a new chainring!

  • I have a cheap fixed rear wheel going spare. OK, it's *very *cheap and not a proper fixed hub, its got a 120mm singlespeed hub with a 14t cog stuck on it. I mean stuck, I shoved it on with about a ton of loctite. Rode on it fine for a coupla months while getting round to getting a proper wheel. Cost me about £25 new plus the cog (which won't come off unless you have v. strong arms). No idea what chainline it has. Shout if you want it. Looks like this (the one on the back)
