Holdsworth and Campy vintage stuff?

  • The local church minister saw me riding my bmx and asked me to come to his shed - I was scared, but he didn't look like michael jackson so I followed..

He had rescued a 1975 Holdsworth 12spd road bike from the local park, seems like someone ditched it after crashing or someone stole it, went for a ride and got bored. Anyway, he gave it to me in hopes that it'd get fixed and ridden like it should. I've been trying to to just that, but I think this bike should be put together with original or similar parts, and I just don't have the time to do that.

    Here's a list of parts..:

1975 Holdsworth frame and forks, 531 Professional Reynolds tubing. I think it's a 60cm frame, pretty big. Has medium horizontal dropouts and is painted gold, original paint as far as I can tell. It has a fair number of scratches and unfortunately a pretty big dent on the right seatstay, as well as a couple smaller ones on the seattube and downtube.

back wheel: campagnolo hub that spins forever with no play that I can feel laced to a rim with no stickers that has seen much better days. Has a 6 speed thingy, not sure if it's a cassete or screw-on.
front wheel: missing, the minister said it was at the park but gone when he went back for it.
chainset: campy with campagnolo pedals and clips. This all looks a fair bit more modern than the frame, but I really wouldn't know.. The cranks spin like crazy as well!
bars: cinelli with cinelli stem, no bar tape..
gears and brakes: can you guess? yup, all campy stuff, although the front brake has a bent post and they're both really rough/tight, although they look pretty good. Maybe rust somewhere?

The seatpost and headset are also campagnolo. The seat is in pretty bad shape, no idea what it is but you'd want to replace it anyway.

I'm not looking for much for the bike since it was given to me anyway, but I'd love to see it go to someone who'd make it shine! Throw me some offers or suggestions of someone/somewhere who'd like to have it..

Also, if you think it might have been your bike in the past and you can prove it, you're welcome to come pick it up!

    Cheers :)

  • what a cool post!

  • you should put some pics up }:^)

  • I will, I left the camera battery charging, so will do that when I get home :)

  • Dammit that sounds exactly what I'm after. 60cm however way to big for me. I would given some money to the church an all...

  • maybe sell it in bits?

  • photoben I'll check the frame size when I get home, but it's definately quite big.. I'm 5ft 10 and standing over the frame, my balls get squashed a bit haha.

joe_b: I'm kinda waiting to see if someone wants the whole thing so they could rebuild it as a vintage roadie or whatever, but if it doesn't happen, I'm definately up for selling in bits. I'm sure I'd get more money out of it as well, but.. at the moment money's thankfully not a priority!

btw - all proceedings will go towards a nice dinner with the missus, please don't think I'll be giving the money back to the church!

  • Yeah don't worry, it'll defintely be to big for me.

Glad to see the money is going to a good cause ;)

  • lucky you, why wouldn't someone give me a bike like this?

  • I was using an old Holdsworth frame to build my first fixed gear until the dropout broke off when I tried to take off the derailer. check post with pictures here:

So I'm really interested in the bike, the reactions I got on my post were all about newer frames and I'd like to use an old frame and parts to build my bike. (I already have a nice old seat and a wheelset)
Let me know what you want for it. cheers Tuur
feel free to email me at meneer{at}tuurvanbalen.com

  • edmundane: it takes years of practice to be as charming as I am! hehe..

meneer: just sent you an email, cheers :)

  • frame, forks, stem and seat post gone.. Pretty much all that's left is back wheel, chainset and bars. I'll try to get pics as soon as possible but meneer currently has this stuff over at his place, so might be a while!
