My point would be they are "Americanocentric", so knowing geographical facts about your own country would only prove that....the fact is they are generally pretty ignorant about the world outside their borders, that's not an insult it's an observation and is probably down to education and cultural reasons....When in the States I've always found Americans to be incredibly friendly and genuine people (excepting New York).

I remember seeing an interview with a waitress who served the 9/11 bombers while they were in training, she thought that the language Americans speak is "American".... pretty extreme example but it demonstrates my point!
