Senior on fixed gear

Posted on
  • Today i was on my way to work and spotted someone sliding thru traffic with elegance and steadyness, then once i caught up with him , i noticed to my amazement that the rider must have been at least 65 if not older, riding a converted road condor in light blue.
I smiled at him before overtaking.
I really hope to be that cool in 35 or so years

  • Me too. He's probably been riding for years.

  • i recently saw an old boy of a similar age on a just as old steel lugged track bike going through ealing, gave him a smile and got a nod back........8^)

  • Stef I really hope to be that cool in 35 or so years

He's probably been considered slightly UNcool by his gear-peers for the last 35 years.

  • Stef Today i was on my way to work ...

What do you do for work - Breakfast Television presenter, or something?

  • lol...something

i meant, i hope i'll still be able to cycle like that in 35 years or so

  • there's a number of them here:

  • The only person I have seen in my area riding fixed is an old guy called Jack (around 60)who rides an immaculate emerald green Mercian. He introdced himself to me at some traffic lights where he preceeded to do a no handed track stand with seemingly no effort...Damn him!

    did you get his number?:)

  • Whilst out on a (geared) ride a few months back, I approached an old chap pushing his fixed bike up a nasty hill, when I drew level with him I said that if I had a gear like that I'd also be walking up the hill. I think he actually appreciated the fact that I knew he was on a fixed!

  • Theres also another old boy I see riding around angel brakeless!, he has an old orange paperboy bag ive exchanged nods with him next time ill try to stop and have a chat. would be interesting to hear his story.

  • Not an old guy as such (older than me perhaps) but anyone know the dude riding the blue machine with Costa Rica stickers, cut down risers, brown leather satchel, riding west along Marylebone Rd..

  • in the same vein, when i went on CM in december i saw a rasta on a bike which seemed to have the colours of the jamaican flag on it. It was in immaculate condition, anyone seen him? I've only seen him once.

ooh dont tell me he's riding down pentonville road from angel brakeless!

  • Yeah these guys have been around for years and they will still be after this fad of everyone wanting to ride fixies passes. The old guy used to be a courier. Im pretty sure those old guys would give you all a good whippin as well

  • Current rollapaluza roller record was set by a 62yo..

He's actually only 26 years old - started riding fixed at 18, stresses on his body from being overgeared, constant mental dread due to riding brakeless; brought on a premature ageing process.

Buffalo Bill's waiting for his GCSE results, and Hippy is getting excited about going to 'big school' in September.
