63cx's Fixed Gear 101Have you read the emergency stop procedures in there? Frankly I don't like the sound of any of them!

I would agree with Winston. I see no reason why you wouldn't have a front brake on your bike. If you choose not to use it that is fine but I feel it is better to be safe then sorry.

If you want to ride your track bike without a front-brake, do it at a velodrome.
-
• #30
squoocher its a sannino pursuit frame with no room for a brake, don't know the tech details but its fairly low geared so stopping is quite easy in theory
Just put it away untill you know how to ride it. What ever happened ot the evolution from mtb to road bike to fixie with a brake and finally after a couple of years maybe no brakes.
I mean just even asking this question here sounds so totally retarded.....

Buffalo Bill If you want to ride your track bike without a front-brake, do it at a velodrome.
Seconded.
Motion therefore passed and added as fixie rule A-01.

The first rule of fixie club is...
there is no fixie club!
Doesn't anyone realise that front mounts are for bikes that have f***ing saddle-bags on? Yes, that's right: front mounts are for cyclo-tourists. All you fake-tourists should stop trying to appropriate the credibility of us real-cyclo-tourists.
Bah!

is it uncool because by the end of it you're brakeless? :P
When u've got the skills you're cool, when you don't, you either die or endanger other road users. it doesn't make any difference how long it takes.
that evolution gives your cycling life a longevity u got years to enjoy being on the saddle. first thing u do think u're cool go out on a brakeless fixie see how long u last before u can even enjoy riding it?

mate just go out in the rain thats the best way to learn how to skid
you'll also probably also come back thinking about adding a brake
-
• #37
riding brakeless just needs getting used to, i think it makes me concentrate a bit more, and when you get in sticky situations instead of stopping just get out pf the way...
i had my first brakeless ride in London at about 5pm , it was raining and i was late for work, oh and i was running on armadillos, nearly got killed by a cabbie that didn't indicate but made it unharmed. -
• #38
un armed!!! stef i am never taking my front brake off if the risk is that high!
-

i went from riding a mtb rarely to riding fixed everyday.
i had a period with no brakes whilst i waited for a lever to come through when i first
got my fixed but have always had a front brake on since. i think having a front brake is
good for emergencies when something happens and you HAVE to stop.
i dont believe all the stuff about skidding being just as good as braking. also you can just
grab a brake lever whereas when spinning it canbe harder to think "right im gonna have to lean forward lock up and try and control my skid and stop in 10-20 feet???"however i envy those who ride brakeless successfully as it looks sweet:)

What happened to this thread? Wasn't it about how to skid, rather than a C+ brakes/brakeless?
Quick hippy - lets just start talking about what's the best sweets or beer.

lets get back on track.
i skid but either not leaning forward and lifting my fottin front
and jamming down my back one whilst lifting off the saddle a bitor
i lean forward and jam my back foot back and stop the pedals. the more weight
you put on the bars the easier it is to skid but i dont think it is as quick at stopping, less friction? -
• #42
Yes, let's get track bikes back on the track:

I shall certainly bee there after cycling to dunwich ;)
Mind you when I skid soon as I release the pressure off the handlebars I get shooting pains up my lower arms. Hurts like a bastard.

As long as he knows that and rides accordingly he will be cool, ride how you want but take it easy while you are purfecting the hocky stops e.t.c Don't ride up peoples asses e.t.c common sense, if you can't stop as quickly chill it's like riding in the rain, you have to take it easy. Know your limits e.t.c.
