Go into a shop and try on some of their discounted pairs. I've got some ok Nike, Pearl Izumi and Endura pairs from (hate to admit) Evans for 30-35UKP.

I am just about to order some lycra shorts could some one give me an idea on size. The shorts I am looking in the size chart give me hights wise a L or XL but that results with a of waist 38 - 41". I am scrany b*gger so going by waist size (if a wear correct fitting trousers I am between a 32" and a 34") which puts me on a small. It make more sense to go with the small size but will this result in them being too tight in other places?

I'm at the wrong end of the scale to be of any use to you in this matter. :)

Sizing lycra shorts is real hard :(
I bought some small Condor own brand ones, and while the padding and crotch area is the right size they are f-cking tight round the waist. So I bought some Endura ones in Medium to see if that would be better, while the waist was fine the crotch and padding were way to big.

You have to try them in a shop.. they're never the same feckin size!
I have some XXL of these and they are too big (gonna ebay 'em unless any big lads here want 'em?): http://www.cyclexpress.co.uk/.%2fProducts%2fBoulder_3_4_Baggy_Shorts.aspx

I find my Condor ones really uncomfortable - the padding is all wrong. But they are on sale at about £12 at the moment. Most comfy ones I have are made by "Madison" and from the LBS - £16 I think. I think these £50 jobs are ludicrous.
I know hippy will love the thought of me in lycra so I am asking for recomendations. The Dunwhich dynamo will be my fist proper distance ride so I want to be comfy so please help me out on my quest for lycra.
Price about 30 gbp I am afraid so no 80 quid bibs. Wiggle seems to have a wide selection but I don't know what to look for.
