They do work. You don't think people dress in this kinda thing because they like the look of their own beer gut in lycra? We ain't all that daft!
Some of the '3D' chamois designs can go too far. All my early knicks had a chamois that was essentially flat. You could also try the tri shorts which have only a very thin pad.
