50mpw of commuting, plus whatever hacking-about gets done at the weekend.

Minimum of 40 miles per week for me riding to and from work. I'd like to do more, though. I tend not to ride much on my days off, perhaps an extra 20 miles a week at most, usually because I'm knackered from work and just want to chill out.

about 60 or so commuting, plus whatever I do at the weekend. if i'm training I try to do another 40-60 on top of that, though I am way out of the habit at the moment and can't even drag my sorry arse down the gym.

Commute 54 miles a week
Tuesday night pub run, 30-45 miles [20 in winter]
Sunday club run anything from 30 - 100 miles
I usually average around 80 - 100miles a week until I ride an Audax that can throw the average right out the window.See the mileage most of you do, you would have no trouble riding an Audax.

Wow Fixedwheelnut I thought you must do mad training mileage to do your massive Adax rides. How far through a season is it before you start doing your 600k w/e rides and how much training extra do you do for the super randomurs (spelling?) PBP e.t.c

It's not the mileage that's the problem, it's the going slow enough from the start to actually make the distance, getting to the start line and navigating (god no! noooo!).
-
• #34
Yeah navigating, I get lost in my fridge some times.
-
• #35
F.W.N how long does it take to recover from a long ride? can you hop back on the bike monday morning and blast up the road? i hate commuting with tired legs as it means there is a slight chance i might get overtaken.

That's my problem. I pretty much sprint my whole way to work :)

same here. Always want to ride slow but end up with the sweat dripping like an old tap. Can't help going full pelt most of the time.

Always want to ride slow
Whaaaaat?????!!!!!
Seriously though, I always leave home soooo tired, but my first mile and a half is solid uphill so by the time I've finished that I've got blood/adrenaline pumping round and can't help myself after that. -

Just got childseat for fixed beater. Will be gearing down to about 65", running slightly wider (ie softer tyres) for his comfort, and cruising around a lot slower (15mph?), at least until he starts chanting "faster, faster!".
I expect I'll be redressing the balance though, when I get out on my own...
-
• #40
'always ride slow', as in, try to control my unfathomable desire to race. race anything. cars, trucks, other cyclists, motorbikes through traffic on the a40, birds. I have the same thing with the blood pumping though :) it only takes 5 minutes to decide my clothes can dry out, and I start pedalling hard. -thats when the sweat comes, in case you thought I meant I was pouring at 5mph.

just wondering, how old is your little one? I really want to take my boy out, but he's only 5 months old. Not sure if he's quite ready yet.
-
• #42
He's just turned 9 months. Seems to be when a lot of parents think "yep, it's time". They should be capable of sitting up unaided for as long as they feel like ie. have the neck strength to support their head plus 250g of helmet.
I'm doing his helmet fitting in short bursts whilst wearing mine (a rarity!). Got the CoPilot Limo seat cos I already had the Blackburn rack, and I didn't like the look of the Hamax 'bouncy' fitting (plus the seats weigh a ton).
We've sat him in the seat, and he immediately started doing his patented psychotic rocking movement, so I think it's going to feel more like pulling a trailer :-p
-
• #43
They can't go a' riding 'till they can support their head, or support Cofidis in the Tour.
-
• #44
cool. Without edging this into a mothers and babies thread, I reckon it should'nt be long- he's already pulling him self along and he's growing fast 'n stuff. I'd like to think that he'll learn to ride the same time as he learns to walk, but thats idealistic thinking really...
-
• #45
Gaffa tape 2 foot blocks of wood to his feet and get him on that turbo trainer - he'll thank you in later life.

Backwardation
mareeoh when i was working everyday as a courier was about 250/300 miles a week...
I don't know why but I just thought you boys covered more miles. I suppose that is still up to 60 miles a day!
it depends in wich company you work , like people that works for city sprint maybe do about 400 miles a week coz they go far away, i just stay city and west end, so i ride less...

600s are usually June onwards, once you have done a few seasons you learn how to pace yourself and what to eat drink etc I try to book a Monday off after a 600 but have ridden in when I have to just take it easy for a few days.
When I have done early 400s like Easter Arrows to York it can be tough as it is cooler and early season.
I log my miles on bikejournal.com
I'm on about 3400+ so far for the year and 500 for july sample table of July s rides below

For rides like PBP you have to keep the miles up, I was under prepared in 2003 so made a better effort for LEL in 2005, especially as I had £1800 sponsorship riding on it.
On top of my usual stuff I took longer rides home 20 -50 miles and rode them as fast as possible at least once usually twice a week and at least once a month usually after work on a Saturday rode one of our 100km audax routes that starts in Wrotham so door to door was 103 miles I felt much better with the extra miles in.
cheers

Thanks for the info. Are there any good 100km ish loop rides you know that start off from south east London I think you said you where living in Bromley I am near Woolwhich so I guess it would be things like out to the meadway?

I'm in Bexleyheath, it depends what for a leisure ride I like heading down to Laddingford the Chequers is a great pub and there is always the Padwell Arms at Stone Street on the way back aswell.
For faster training ride I head out through Bexley, Swanley, Eynsford, Otford Pilgrims way to Wrotham and ride as much of the other 100km route as I want to.That heads out via Ightam, Hadlow, Laddingford, West Peckham and down to Charing Heath.
For something harder there is always the Grimpeur ride that I have organised the last three years
Otford, Rowdow Hill, Exedown Hill, Ightam, One Tree Hill, Riverhill, Hubbards Hill, Baileys Hill, Yorks Hill back to OtfordI have route checked that on 68" fixed and I have to walk One Tree and Yorks they are just to steep for me but road them in the past on gears
126 - 130 minimum monday to friday depending on routes + eronds + w/e.
Not that far but enough of my time is spent commuting I would not want to have to spend anymore time getting to and from work.
