  • Okay I'm kind of baffled by the whole matching up bottom brackets to cranks. I'm thinking of getting the Stronglights Roberto is selling for a pub bike. What bottom bracket am I after? Square tapered I gather but for a 42mm chainline do I want 103mm, 107mm?

"Compatible with JIS Taper bottom bracket with 107mm e.g. JP400 or JPSPB"

    from the ribble site.

  • Ah, should have just read up a little more. Thanks a lot Hovis!

  • no problem.

  • brargh. i suppose this is another case of practice over theory. well spotted, kowalski.

Will at hubjub recommends a 103mm bottom bracket with stronglight cranks.

  • as a side note, the link on the hubjub site is a fantastic resource:

    Track Component Specs

  • Ahh, my medium sliced mate.

    Look here:

    http://www.byercycles.co.uk/05.htm

    Richard at Byers recommends 111mm.

So both recommendations are 4mm adrift of Stronglight's.

Depends which way that 2mm error is.

A mate of mine just bought that crank, I'll let you know his findings.

  • nargh! i guess it's best to see what your friend says. wait! unless ffub has an italian threaded bottom bracket?

I actually emailed them after seeing this on their Stronglight page:

Stronglight claim a 107mm JIS BB will give a 'true' 42mm chainline. That wasn't our experience, but, if you ride a 120-spaced bike, you will likely have an easier time dialling in a track crank like this than you would a repurposed singlespeed set.
