Roberto got his Mercian built for left hand drive side....
-
• #3
anyone got any photos!?

Instead of using flat pedals, use spd's with the left side cleat reversed. Or us a tandem crank, which is designed to go on the left.

There are no pics of it built up, and he's sold it now to someone in Australia, but u can see that the left-hand rear chain stay is chromed.

The pedals will be the wrong way around, so will be likely to unscrew, since you are pedalling against the tightening effect.
Check out sheldon browns "homemade tandem" pages for details of putting cranks on the wrong sides.... -

make sure you locktite your pedels in and keep an eye on the lockring. Remember the lock ring will betaking more force more often if you run your bike lhd

i dontreally see the point? quite a lot of hassle isnt it?
or am i being stupid? -

Get 2 identical cranksets and a flip-flop and you could run a burley double chain !!!
Never worry about snapping a chain again. -

I supose if you want to use clipless, you could just swap the axels around, or do they screw in opposite also?
Joe_b, it's just to be different!

Funny I was wondering about this just yesterday, being left-handed I thought it would be appropriate. Guess you could get someone to do it proper and re-thread the cranks for you so they go the other way without the pedals falling off...

some bmx's have the drive on the left.so it can be done
-
• #14
the hub is made for it as are the cranks.
-
• #15
ah, wondered about that,........Profile????
-
• #16
yep they make a hub and crank. Most Bmx cranks will take a chain ring on either side, and the hubs are special.

bikesoiler (oz mate) built an ss mtb with a left-hand drive. It's doable but you need to watch for stuff unscrewing.
PITA if you ask me. Someone build a central drive though - that'd be cool - I love symmetry. Plus, the TT aero nuts will love you forever.. -

i recall reading somewhere that you can simply use eggbeaters for your pedals to save messing with cleats. though i am not a fan of eggbeaters myself

BMXers I can understand - I'm guessing it allows goofy riders to do tricks/grinds etc that would otherwise be on their wrong side. But can someone please explain why it might be a good thing on a fixie - Is it just being different for the sake of it?

Option B, thanks Eddie.

WTF?

I think he means because the cleats have a fore and aft symetry and hence if you swap the pedals round you don't have to turn the cleats around
As above really, cant't see why it would be a problem. obviously need flat pedals, (as they'd be back to front)
