  • As you may know, next month the Cycle Messenger World Championships are happening in Dublin. If that seems like a long way for an alleycat, the now traditional World Championship Pre-event weekend is going to be here in london from Thursday 26th to Monday 31st July 2007.

Before anyone asks, its open to m***ers, fers, ex-m*rs, non-f***ers, ex-f**ers, etc, in fact, just about anyone who has a bike, £20 and wants to race on the road, track and/or rollers. (*Bike and racing not compulsory)

Yeah, £20 seems like a lot, but you get what josh described as
" a T-shirt with Dirty Donna's design, Stickers, interesting guide booklet, TFL map, two of the greatest Alleycats ever conceived, 2 partys with 6 or 7 great bands plus DJs and Roller Racing, free breakfast from Pogo cafe Saturday, Trackstands, Skids and all that plus several cargo bikes full of prizes, about a dozen bags, some frames, wheels, chainsets etc. Not to mention a great weekend and a sore head Monday. Not bad for a score, eh."

Pre-registration is open now, so we'll be around the Snow, the Duke, etc on Friday, or catch one of us at the Steps, or lurking outside of Creative on Berwick St. Or if you'd rather leave it until the last minute, on the 26th and 27th we'll be at the Foundry, on the corner of Old and Great Eastern Streets. But dont blame me if your favourite lucky spoke card number is gone..

    Dont come out in london?

Hostels.. DODGY! Why you little!! I've had many a good time in yoof hostels.
I tried to stay in them when I was touring in '05 coz I was alone on the road all day and they were usually a laugh (cept the public german ones full of families).

    yeah im tha bath one!
im sure hostels in london would be better than the one i stayed in in barcelona!
no locks on the doors great!!!
if i decide to come up ill try and get my godmother to let me stay at her place or ill try
and find a decent hostel! ill need to change my gearing for the city!
i have a dura-ace sprocket but it doesnt tell me what size it is? as in 1 1/8 or 3/3???
    how can i find out???

  • Locks? Pfft. I stayed in a 25 bed dorm room in Hamburg. Fscking laugh that was! :D

Measure its width or compare it with one you know is either 1/8th or 3/32nds of an inch.
If your chain fits over the cog then it's ok. What gearing do you have anyway? It can't be that different here.

  • i have 15(i think need to check!) and 39. its that or 51 instead of 39!

  • 39/15 is sweet. 51/15 is too big (IMHO)

  • really? i thought i wouldnt be able to get enough speed to stay with anyone?
im thinking of getting a 14t sprocket eventually but its really hilly round here so not sure how sensible it is???
i should get a chain tool as well!

  • It's ok, us Londoners are really, really slow. 69 inches is where it's at! Mmm... 69...
    Just spin faster!

  • yeah hills are a spin disaster! been comtemplating swapping my flip flop around!!!

  • Any hill in London is doable on a 48/16 which I will be switching back to for the Dun-Run.
For my commute I use a 48/13, once you work up steam you fairly fly along.

  • No wanted to post on my thread about london calling sulk

  • say goodbye to your knees!

  • winston: what do you ride on the road? bike and gearing?

  • Not at all, have ridden 48/16 for eight years - need a greater resistance now I don't ride as many KMs.

  • rakan No wanted to post on my thread about london calling sulk

The thread might have started as London Calling, but mostly its people talking about hostels and the benefits of 48/16 gearing..More speed, less likelihood of still having your own kneecaps past 40, as far as I can tell...
