  • sorry to disapoint there are only a couple of bikes there atm, and none of any notablility. not really worth a drive. I'm guna start popping down there every few weeks so i'll let you know if anything cool pops up. Yer they kinda laughed when i picked up this broken/semi stripped bike and asked them how much.

  • Are there any second-hand bike shops in England? In Melbourne there was a place called BicycleRecycle and it was filled to the brim with all manner of bmx, road bikes, full on DH bikes, old track kit, parts, forks, NOS bits, everything!!! Again, it might come down to the fact that bikes here get used until they're scrap whereas in Oz they just get thrown out.

  • their is a bike shop in bristol where i got my benotto second hand.
they stock a few things and they have one yellow track bike in atm that is second hand.
its a small cyclist owned shop.
i think they ripped me off for my bike a tad but not too certain.
    its called "bikeworkshop"

  • There are quite a few regular bike shops that have second hand stock, they'll do trade-ins and whatnot. You're won't find them in Central London though! Bromley Bikes does second hand bikes. They're over priced though. £150 for a 7 speed Raleigh with downtube shifters - no thanks.

theres a joint called recycle in elephant and castle, crazy prices though

  • G-whizz in Brighton is a local one for me. Reasonable selection always with some nice old road bikes. and he's sympathetic to SS/FG. He's helped me on a number of occassions.

There really needs to be more places like this and less £100 pro bike pieces of sh1t that end up in the tip after a couple of years.

  • yeah if someone risked setting up a place that sold all second hand stuff and bought it i think
they could do pretty well eventually. i would much rather buy an old bike and convert than
buy a langster or something. second hand old bikes have more character.

  • i really want to be part of some re-cycle london type thing but cant find anything about
i was told its because there are so many stolen bikes about,

i wanna make bikes and trikes and cargo beasts and everything

  • jv theres a joint called recycle in elephant and castle, crazy prices though

Yeah I dunno how they get away with that!

  • yeah, the elephant and castle one cant really be trusted either, iv heard from several people that it buys bikes with any form of id or anything, therefore some of what you buy there is probably stolen. and for the prices your probably better just saving up a bit more and getting a bike from bike lane bikes.

This place is in Cambridge. Some bikes are overpriced but you can pick up some nice stuff. They are also very helpful and knowledgable.

That's more like it. Guess it'll never happen in London with theft, Halfords, etc..

  • Yeap I got my frame from the dump, it is crap though, but it does it's job :). Just head to the edge of London and most tips will let you buy stuff off the guys, haggle though. Bexley for one.

to get the cranks off you will need a crank puller, this is a cheap tool that you will use loads about 10-15 gbp.

You MAY need to remove the cranks to replace the b.b to sort out he chainline when you have built your read wheel, do not try and ride it with a dodgy chainline, but you may be lucky and beable to place the chainring on the inside of the spider. If you have to replace the b.b this is where you may run into trouble 1970's Peugeot has a high chance of having a french b.b, if so your best bet is taking it to a desent bike shop and get then to reshread it to italian threading then you will have a selection of b..b lengths to choose from.

For a cheap wheels these hubs are cheap

    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-SJSC-36-hole-SJSC-Double-Fixed-Large-Flange-Track-Hubs-with-high-quality-sealed-cartridge-bearings--Polished-Alloy-finish--per-pair-11137.htm

    £40 for the pair plus two open pro rims 2 x £18 + spokes £0.3 x 36 x 2 = £97.6

This is really cheap and if you look after them you and transfer them to your next bike. The wheels will make a massive diference to your ride and will be the most expensive thing on your bike, do not try and cut corners it will work out badly in the end. £100 for a pair of wheels is cheap save up get a job if you don't already have one beg what ever but a half decent set of wheels are worth it.

lastly don't cheap out on your cog buy a good one add a lock ring.

  • these hubs even come with lock rings so even cheaper!

  • I heard there's a guy up in Watford who sells secondhand bikes cheap.

That's all I know. Could be a fantasy.

  • Walthemstow has a bike recycling place. Heard ok things about it, but never been.

These guys know their stuff. But they are really expensive. They mainly sell to students who can't be bothered to move away from the town centre by a mile or so to cheaper places!

  • Tommy those hubs look fantastic. thanks for the link, and it yer i'm trying to not skimp too much, but also I dont want to put too much money into something i've never tried before, the way i'm looking at it is: build as cheap as possible initially, see what fixed riding is actually like, and then providing all goes well either upgrade or build another better one. That make sence?
On the update front I do now have a front wheel now. I popped into halfords, (just happened to be passing) and discovered that an old friend worked there now. I told him about my fixie thoughts n how the next thing on the list was wheels, he disappears for a minute and come back holding a wheel, it came in a box of wheels, but was completely un-branded n wasnt on the stock chart, so now for £8 i now have a front wheel, its nice and light, and spins true, so i'm pretty happy with it.

  • Wow that's an amazing find for £2. Nice cranks too!

  • I'm off to Ravensbourne (its an art uni just round the corner from bromley) I got onto their graphic design course, which i'm very happy about.

  • Cool. There's loads of art students on here! There's another chem student, though I can't remember who...

  • yer us art types are always up for some alternative fun lol
    look i found a chain ring :D

  • i was at ravensbourne - 20odd years ago tho - and doing tv!

  • A couple of my best mates are art students and nothing will shift their arses onto a bike :P

Quite pricey but all chainrings are I suppose...
