Really good D-locks (ie Krypto NYC D-lock) are heavy, are a real pain to lug around but offer the best protection. Really good chains (ie Krytpo Fug) are heavy, still a real pain to lug around but slightly easier to carry around your waist.
I use a Abus Steel-o-flex most of the time. Its a decentish lock, but its much quicker and easy to lock with than a Fug chain (and doesn't scratch the bejesus out of your frame). I use the Fug chain and D-lock for those nights out on the bad side.

d-locks all the way.

D-lock which lives in my bag (you get used to the weight quickly enough and it doesn't take up too much space) plus an abus chain which lives at work for double locking.

a length of heavy duty chain and a super-duper padlock from a hardware store will cost you about a third of exactly the same thing in a bike shop branded as a bicycle lock...

if thats what you think i hope you havent got a great bike because it will get nicked. those newyork noose/abus chains are nothing like normal chains u buy at a hardware shop, thats why they cost so much

i agree. you might as well use that white plastic stuff they put around pub gardens.
Plus, the insurance won't like it when you put in a claim for your stolen bike, and they ask what it was locked with, Krypton or Abus, and you say - 'Nope -even beter than that - a length of B&Q's finest!'

so if i buy a NY chain instead of a chain from a hardware shop,do you think someone with a pair sof bolt cutters is not gonig to have a go?? as that video shows it doesnt matter what lock you use,if someones got bolt cutters your fucked
-
• #10
i thought kryptonite new youk noose/fahgedabouitt and the abus equivalent could withstand bolt cutters?
i've seen the chains and i couldnt imagine bolt cutters getting through them, an angle grinder yeah....

• #11

this fat builder type gets out 4ft bolt croppaz and snaps sold secure rated chains in less than the time it would take to read this sentence.

Two dodgy things about that video:
1) They didn't buy the chain so theres no guarantee its a krypto fug chain. They were given it by their customers.
2) Even if it is a Krypto fug chain, the age of the chain is not mentioned. Krypto fug chains have been seriously upgraded in recent years.
Theres a good response from Kryptonite here, which made me feel better about it. Granted they have a vested interest so the truth is probably somewhere in between.
Still the video shows why D-locks are better than chains, but chains are damn easier to use. In the cycling plus test Krypto links to, the chains only lasted 1 minute 19.6 seconds against power tools.

i have read so much stuff about locks and it seems like the new york d lock is the best.
i dont want to spend £50-60 on a lock but i would rather do that than buy a new bike!does anyone have any suggestions for bike lights.
i want those rubber knog things but need bright ones for being on unlit roads.
the bigger version is good but the bastard things run out and you cant replace the
batteries???
i want something quite minimal -
• #23
from what i've read the abus granite d lock level 25 pisses all over the new york d lock but 160 is a lot of dough
-
• #24
160 is over half the price of my bike!
i am starting to feel like my bike is shite(dont say probs is)
and i should of saved up a bit more and boughta standard fixie like
a pista or a langster, but then again everyone slates them??? -
• #25
cheers mate.
i definately feel like that aswell because i dont know anyone who rides
fixed other than myself and my dad cannot understand why i would want to ride
it. note: he has an £750 powered bike. you know those weird electric ones!
Unsure of what to get, you could keep a chain lock round yr waist, would be better than in yr bag. . . what d´ya reckon
