here we go again...

I see I'm not the only one with forumographic memory. ;)
I would say the best lock is no lock. If you have no lock you'll never let go of your bike (if you wanna see it again) and therefore won't lose it to thieves.

Cover your top tube with pipe insulation to make it look rubbish, with cable ties.
Then a Kryptonite NY 3000 D lock through the seat stays and rear wheel to an IMMOVABLE object, i.e. not scaffolding or anything that could be sawed apart, dismantled, removed with the bike etc. Then a Kryptonite Evolution Mini for the front wheel. Cable through the saddle rails to the u-lock.
Done. That's my set up, anyway. And my beater bike from when I was really young when I leave it outside the train station late at night.

eeehhhh i.e. not scaffolding or anything that could be sawed apart
so that'll be a diamond lampost then?
-
• #33
No, because it could be lifted OVER the diamond lampost.. sheesh! :P
-
• #34
You know what I mean! :P
Just got to think how much your bike is worth, and how much effort a thief will go through to get it.

my bike is worth 300 and i dont really mind buying an NY now
because i know i cant afford a new bike but i can afford a decent d-lock. -
• #36
some old chap in dalston told me alwaysuse two locks, a hoodie in my building told me to use abus, he doesn't know anyone that ever managed to crack one open, thaqt's a d lock obviously.
i'm thinkng that taking the front wheel out is still the best idea. i don't do it though.
I was also thinking today that it wouldn't be bad idea to lock through fraqme, wheel and get the cranks involved.
I was reading on the guardian a while ago that abus came out with some locks with an ear piercing alarm. Anyone heard of those? That'll be my mini d-lock. -
• #37
sound a little bit like the "help help someone is raping my bike" alarm that we discussed a bit back

I was also thinking today that it wouldn't be bad idea to lock through fraqme, wheel and get the cranks involved. That's what I do quite often. Just get the cranks horizontal and stick the pedal in the u lock as well, just to make it more fiddly to break.

Now I had my bike stolen, was wondering if anyone had a spare frame for sale so i can start building a new bike?
-
• #40
whats your budget?
-
• #41
Anything up to about £150 for the fame but the cheaper the better really. Going to try make the whole thing for £300.
