  • egg beaters are not as secure as either times of shimano, recently gone back to spd's after unclipping after a panicky stop, nearly lost it big time, too much float and not enough platform.

  • High speed skidding when you don't have your SPDs tensioned up = high speed unclipping. Double-sided defo easier to clip back into (if you haven't chewed tarmac already). Also what Scott not Scot said. I use SPD-SL on the road bike and they rock.

  • 5-6 degrees 'o float in ATACs.

  • i dont think he mean unclipping by accident? i think he means when setting off?
like setting off down a hill?

  • 5deg float on the ATAC Aliums

  • ok they have 5 deg float - but they cost a bomb! perhaps a 2nd hand pair..

  • oops sorry hippy - beat me to it.

  • I guess it's all relative but £25 is less than a tenner more than SPDs. But then you have to buy shoes too..

  • I had My ATAC Carbons for 7+ years, ride them every day - no problems to report.

  • just gone back to clipless today, as I got given some crank bros things, they are crazy loose but I can still skid in them (and in my pants) it's really the shoe that gives you all the extra power, I'd rather have £30 time atacs and a £70 racing mtb shoe than cheap shoes and pricey pedals.

it all wears out at the end of t'day, if i had a choice I'd go for the Times and whatever shoes fit you well and have a stiff sole.

Toe clips were hurting my feet, but I'll still pop them on from time to time..

  • I got some ATAC carbons to replace my SPDs and they are loads better. They feel a lot more secure (on the lowest tension setting) and maybe have a bit more float. Clipping in and out is just as easy. I've also tried some road pedals (Campy Record) and they felt a lot less secure and as though they had less float.

I think that for fixed riding that a two sided pedal is good and lots of float is good (hockey stop skids). For urban riding a mtn bike shoe is a lot easier to walk in. Those factors make me think that a mtn clipless system is the way forward.

  • Another vote for ATACS here - wouldn't ride anything else now..... the float is really nice...

  • smeear(smeear) im thinking about making the move over to clipless also? but ya know it's all extra moneys
rakan has some nice shoes that look easy to walk in and cheap

They were 40 when i bought them like 3 years ago. Real easy to walk in. If you are wearing them all day they arent that comfortable though.

I reckon i will wear them till they break and then buy some more expensive something.

  • i swear by speedplay frogs - they're double sided but with no moving parts on the pedal itself (apart from the axle, obviously). I was having knee trouble with SPDs but it was cured by switching to the frogs as they give you lots of free float (ie with no sprung force to hold your foot it a particular position). They're pretty light too, the cleat is walkable, and there's a grease port. Very satisfying to squirt new grease in and see all the filthy gunk coming out the other end. The only downside is that they're a bit pricey.

  • I just bought some of these, I needed my old pedals for my new pub bike.

    £60 now: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360020441

They could be okay but I'd want them in all black or maybe grey - have to be colour neutral to go with multiple bikes, see? :)

they look nice and all, what shoes have you got ...?

  • Those Specialized ones that look as little like cycling shoes as possible! Sonoma I think they're called - they used to do them with laces but I think they've gone over to velcro now. I had to take a stanley knife to the sole to get the cleats in though as the Frog cleats are a little wider than SPDs.

  • yeah, I've got the Northwave rocksters in black which are similar to those..

Local bike shop here, Moose Cycles, has all the Northwave shoes. I just went for the best fitting ones

  • I'm still undecided if I should go for casual-looking stuff for pub jaunts, etc. or the full-on race look crap?
One better for riding the other better for not riding. Mostly I'm riding so I'm erring on the side of the racier ones.
At least when I fall on my ass in the pub I can blame the shoes! :D

  • velocity boy

All road pedals are one-sided. They tend to be weighted so that the right side is not only up, but that they are kept at an angle easy to hook into.

Errr. No. Speedplay are double-sided. Best pedals ever.

  • Pity about the cleats. ;)
