New bike. what Bits should i buy

Posted on
  • i just bought a 22.5 inch Bob Jackson frame. all i have are pedals and bars to go on it when it arrives. i wanna do this right and i've never built before (although i've taken apart and rebuilt my Langster). what wheels, stem, crank, etc should i buy? how do i know what sizes? where should i buy this stuff? budget of about 250 notes.
    much appreciated.

  • oh, and this is the spec...

A perfect all round track frameset, built in standard gauge Reynolds 631 tubing upto 22 ½” & 631 oversize 23” & above for added rigidity. Manchester / Newport spec & capable of grass track, time trials or hillclimbs.
Fully cast bottom bracket shell, crown & dropouts, also comes with 1 set of bottle fittings, drilled for front brake & takes 19-28mm tyres. Available with mudguard fittings for winter use at no extra cost if required.

  • my advice (although i'm not super experienced) - start with a really good quality
"fit and forget" headset and bottom bracket.

For one - when these items need replacing it can be a hassle getting tools and whatnot.
For two - when these items get shonky/noisey it'll really ruin your ride quality or stop
    you riding all together.

If you don't have enough cash for fancy everything right now (and you don't) - just get
cheapish or 2nd hand stem/bars/saddle/seatpost/rims to begin with. This has the added advantage
of giving you time to figure out what you like/what fits you etc.
No point buying a £60 thomson stem now, when you might find you need one 2cm shorter/longer
    after a bit of experimenting.

Sorry if i sound a bit off but i honestly think this is the way forward - especially as the
difference between your langster and the BJ will be so great...

Good ruck as they say in Japan!

PS> having said all that - once you know what you want and have saved up - GO BLING!
    Shiny silver bits rule ok!

  • miche bottom brackets are about £12 and they rule.

  • I'd have to agree, having followed a similar course myself.

I'd blow the budget on the best wheels you can and trawl eBay for the rest.

Only thing with the BB is there's no point spending out on a top notch one if you don't know which cranks you'll be using in the longer term.

  • On your list, the two most expensive items are wheels and crankset. Oh and you're going to have to spend some coin on getting someone to install a headset and BB if you don't know jack.

You need to know what type of fork you have (threaded vs threadless) and your seatpost dia (which is most likely 27.2).

I'd spend some time on sites like Hubjub.co.uk, FixedGearGallery.com, BusinessCycles.com etc and at Brixton Cycles, BrickLane Bikes etc getting to know what rough prices are and what you like the look of etc.

You definitely want to get a new BB (need to find the cranks first though), headset and chain (need to decide between 3/32" and 1/8" pitch stuff - cranks again should be the decider here). Everything else you could find 2nd hand.

shit yes- i meant to say this, which is why i didn't include cranks in the "buy cheap to start with" list.

  • You can get a complete transmission from http://www.byercycles.co.uk fo about fifty sheets. You have to order over the phone, but they're very helpful.

The RPM crankset is a bargain at £29.99 (just sold mine on the bay). The black one comes with 165's and a 1/8th ring, but the silver might suit yer Bobajob better.

  • great. i live near brixton so i guess i'll strap the frame to my back and take the bus over there when it arrives.
how much should i expect to pay for some decent wheels there?

  • +1 to the idea of decent wheels/bb/headset/cranks. You won't want to be messing about with them, just shell out the cash and get good quality stuff.

  • Except £250 is a bit tight to cover all that, IMHO.

Handbuilt wheels with even modest (Formula) hubs are going to set you back £160-£180.

  • last time i asked at brixton cycles it's 15quid for spokes and 40quid for build. 60quid for a pair of miche hubs and about 70+ quid for a pair of mavics depending on colour. they don't seem to sell deep v's there.

you can get the rims and hubs from online which is cheaper and take it to them and have them build it for you.

think you can get a pair of pre built wheels from brick lane bikes starting from 190.

if you can't afford it just build a back wheel first. front wheels are a plenty on ebay and you can get quite some decent stuff for a tenner. i bought a mavic aksium front wheel in VGC for 26quid inc. P&P.

  • I would start with formulas (£50 for a pair) and mavics (open pros around £70) for a set or get some Harry Rowland ones from BrickLane bikes or from the fella himself, then get any cranks you fancy, get a set that comes with a bb so there will be no compatibility trouble. Ambrosio do it for around £150 and that's ambrosio.
You probably want a brooks or something like that aye? don't bother getting a new one not nearly worth tha cash, search for a second hand or get something different eg selle italia or sam marco do good vintage looking stuff and n.o.s is easily availeble.
Campagnolo headset is a must, i'm using a record, good stem actually grat stem! Roberto's selling some. £40
Then you need a stem a 3t costs around £30ish new, london fields cycles have a selection of them.
Bars go from £5 for cheap mustache or risers , or £40 for track bars.
Chainring wll cost about £35 and sprocket £20, £5 for a decent lockring ( a must in my opinion)
Pedals cost around £20, toeclips £6 and straps...don't know
    Chain a tenner
    Bartape £7 to £ 30
    brakes...from £20 upwards, ride brakeless it's chaper
tyres get some rubinos from wiggle tyre set for £ 17ish, that includes inner tubes and 2 tyres.
As you can see £ 250 will get you as far as wheels go so i would reccomend to either build it slowly and use your langster or if you're the impatient type like me strip your langster and use whatever you can on your B.J.
It'll buy you time but you might end up with a butcher's.
I'm having fun at riding my new frame and searching for the parts.
    Good Luck

this is a good idea while you save pennies for a matching front wheel.
