Zinn and the Art of Bicycle Maintenance
I kid you not, it's truly awesome. Not fixie specific, just ignore the bits about gears.

Mel Allwood does a good one available through Brixton Cycles or the net. Its very good and has lots of detail on the difficult bits. She teaches bike maintainance for Lambeth Cyclists and the class is worth doing. -

Richard's Bicycle Book is great, 2nd edition (i think - i'll check when I get home) from about 1990. It's not just a tech manual but has lots of thoughtful and interesting musings/ramblings, and some nice illustrations. I've been hankering after a Speedy (recumbent trike) ever since but somehow never got round to it (probably something to do with not having a garage and 2000 clams to spare!). I think there was a later full colour hardback edition but it seemed to have lost the charm of the earlier editions.

Not going to teach you an awful lot about bike mechanics but How to Rock and Roll: A City Rider's Repair Manual and Bicycle!: A Repair & Maintenance Manifesto are opinionated, funny books about bikes, urban riding, drinking, with a little bit of maintenance thrown in, all written by an ex-messenger turned wrench.
Its a pretty entertaining read and he does talk about bike mechanics in a way that cuts through a lot of the jargon and technical stuff but you'll need a book like Zinn, the Park tool book etc to actually do anything.
Worth borrowing off someone, but its worth checking out in person cause folks tend to love or hate this kind of rambling narrative.

Book? Book?
Just google "(part name) park tools" or "(part name) sheldon" and you will find everything you need. -

Well, it means you don't get grease on your clothes!
Seriously, I just wear old mountain bike shorts and shirt as they're quite grease resistant and fairly comfy.
I'm fed up of taking my bike to the menders - had a new BB fitted a few weeks ago and its making noises already so thought i'd have a look meself.Anyway don't really know where to start so thought some kind of book would be the best idea - any recomendations? Cheers guys
