Hi,let me also have my first post today. I just recently moved to London from Hamburg -which makes me German - for work. Having been a SSpeeder for years with a trusty vintage bike from the early 50s the step over to the fixed side wasnt too far off and I am now hooked on the fixed feeling on the road. Quickly the total 1h commute is becoming the best part of my workday opposed to the worst (Tube). I bought a secondhand KHS flite 100 repainted and customized it. The Reynolds frame & Sugino cranks are all standard but I fitted a flat bar, a shimano + Goldfinger brake because I liked the name and the girl in the shop was REALLY nice.
I guess I am just a no-nonsense commuter with not much to show off - no bike-mechanic-geek either (yet). Whats the standard incubation time for that guys ?
I read a bit through the Forum and got to know it as a nice place worth to sign up. Unfortunately I am not a designer like everybody else here. I work in IT which also makes some sense because they say computers are bicycles for the brain. : )
Believe me guys I am, even so I messed up this first thread somehow
But I have a Mac,and like taking pictures. Is that arty enough? So that was that... and ah yes and to answer the other thread about which shoe I'd be....I most def. be a Flip-Flop !

Whispering is like a Personal Message - only the person you whisper to can see your comment! - click on your on account at the top, and then account prefs. on the left hand side to mess about with your profile for Avatar etc.

hey,
I personally went down the drain with the New Economy myself twice !
One of the most dazzling periods of my life btw.. Since then I distrust companys with table football games in the staff room and fancy coffee machines.. : )
Only Enron burnt more money than we did ! -

Did you work for WorldCom ??
-
• #14
no I worked for EMS (Gruner&Jahr) and some bits for Tomorrow Technologies in HH
the latter are keep alive by the Band TomTe, which make crap musik
but some people seem to still like it. Oh yes and I owned a brilliant PC for years
which I bought of the insolvency sale of PixelPark across the street.
Is that enough street cred ? -

welcome breglis :)
i studied german in college... although I didn't try very hard and i regret it an awful lot. germany is awesome, especially berlin. nice bike by the way!

Cologne is awesome too - friendliest city I've come across.

I lived in Bonn for two months a while back.
As usual for a Continental-European city the cycling facilities and consideration shown by drivers/Police was top notch. It was also quite off-putting that the pedestrians were all so well disciplined, made a welcome change from the lassie-fare-lemmings-suicide pedestrians here in London.
My German is Nicht Sehr Toll BTW.

So you say being disciplined is a good thing ?
Germans for sure stop at every traffic light, but regardless I get taught here every day just how German I am in the sense of being unpatient.
In Germany a day has 25h. Biking is great you are right. but if you get seen cycling the bike path (1-2m wide in HH) in the wrong direction, you would get screamed at.
I like German language a lot. English is very prompt and just designed for sounding cool, but the German logic with word compounds is just hilarious if you think about it. example ?
a hammock literally translated from German is a "Hang-Mat"
nostrils is "Nose-Holes", Kettle is "Water-Cooker", I could go on..
For the same reason English has abut 1/3 more of vocabulary in everyday usage.Even though it is very very structured and accurat the Grammar is among the worst.
I think we just had to make up for the English verbs + preposition:
get on, get off, get in, get away.....try?Denglish is great though. I taught my collegues a few words, and they love it: "This is totally kaputt"
I naturally think Hamburg is the best city in Germany. Most tourist seem to miss it because it never had a huge Army Base...LOL
No German would ever go and visit Heidelberg for example.....Berlin rockz also -

I always enjoyed the grammar side of German too, very logical (which I like - I'm quite a logical thinker). Haha, my college had a German university student helping in our language department and he always used to complain about our endless verbs and prepositions!
I'm probably going to pick up German again at university, I've been thinking about it for a while. I wish I tried harder with it at college now :(

No, I was making a comparison after riding in London for eight-plus years, hence why I said "off-putting" as in unusual. In London you have to anticipate everybody leaping into your path.
Germans are obsessed with that little green man and will wait forever for him, but that is the law over there, over here people please themselves.
