I use a 'film' of grease on BB axle - sitting on the fence basically.
Tip of the day is to check that any self-extracting crank bolt caps are tight before attempting crank removal. Got caught out there once. Cap bit was slightly loose, and proceeded to strip threads in crank. Couldn't use self-extraction or separate crank puller.
BikeFix have a kit for sticking a new O/S thread in the crank with a matching removal tool, in case anyone ever finds themself in the same situation.
