  • hi everyone i just signed up.
Im Alan, 21 from Portsmouth UK, nice to meet you all.

  • so do you commute to the big smoke then?
    :-)

  • hello all. new to this forum so thought i'd say 'hello' moved to the big smoke a few weeks ago, wanted a fixie for ages and moving here is fuelling the urge even more, going to take the plunge at the end of the month when i get paid. not sure whether to buy an old frame and make one myself or buy a new bike.... like the bianchi pista, specialized langster or pearson touche... always been into bikes but still a novice in terms of all things fixed so any opinions etc of said bikes would be cool. BTW - is the bianchi better because its steel? i want a flip flop hub is that possible with all 3 bikes?

  • hey

i would say build one your slef if you go the time/ skills, you will end up with something much better and more personal then the kids with laksters or pistas

  • any idea what kind of money? a rough estimate i did in my head is as follows..£50 frame, £100 wheels £100 for everything else... reckon thats pretty accurate?

    cheers for your info :-)

  • umm your ot goona get a decet track frame in the uk for less the 200 250ish, so i would go for a old road frme with diagol dropouts and a highish BB check ebay.

  • yep, you can build up an old road frame for £200 ish.

get a donor bike off ebay (don't pay more than £50) mainly for the frame/forks headset and bars/stem or check classifieds in other forums where people give whole bikes away.

either get some s/h wheels or a new set for around £120

the rest is a mixture of what can be salvaged from the donor bike,

maybe some new cranks and BB.

you should budget for chainring, chain and rear cog, also new tyres!

  • benthebrummie hello all. new to this forum so thought i'd say 'hello' moved to the big smoke a few weeks ago, wanted a fixie for ages and moving here is fuelling the urge even more, going to take the plunge at the end of the month when i get paid. not sure whether to buy an old frame and make one myself or buy a new bike.... like the bianchi pista, specialized langster or pearson touche... always been into bikes but still a novice in terms of all things fixed so any opinions etc of said bikes would be cool. Pista looks cool but italian bike made in taiwan with steel? not columbus...i'm not sure plus you're gonna want to change a few bits here and there so it's going to end up being expensive.
Langster...don't bother you'll get discriminated for just having one even though it comes with lifetime warranti on the frame, and carbon forks, if you don't mind compact geometry take one for a spin this one comes with a fli-flop
Touche...dunno anthing about it, what i know is that if you want to get an off the peg fixie go for a Genesis Flyer or Lemond FIllmore if you're looking for steel or Langster if want alluminium

  • thanks for all the info...few more questions though and excuse my lack of bike knowledge. what is a 'highish BB', should i be going for aluminum or steel? if i go for steel which kind? seems to be so many different numbers..

  • BB = Bottom Bracket

You want a high one when riding fixed as you can't stop pedalling when going through a corner... a raised bottom bracket means your pedal won't strike the ground (which you can imagine the consequences of).

Steel gives a better feel and is very durable. Most aluminium frames feel a little more dead in comparison to steel, but aluminium is lighter. It's good for the track where the surface is smooth, but if you're going to be on the road then steel will be an overall better option.

The only downside to steel is that it corrodes, so do take care of it.

531 upwards. The higher the number, the better some of the properties are. Is 753 or 853 better than 531? Yes, but are you and I going to be able to feel the difference? I ride 853 because I could afford to, I very much doubt it gives me any great advantage. As with all bike technology, no matter how expensive you still have to pedal.

  • thanks david some great advice there...just gotta find a frame now! unless anyone knows of anyone selling one......i'm after a 54 or 56

    thanks

  • go to bricklane bikes tomorrow, thei're getting some track frames in tomorro, rumour sez it's gonna be columbus, i'll go to have a look
