JimmyP Hi,
New to the forum. I'll post more about myself in the right place when I get a few moments.
In response to the suggestion to take your own bike. I took mine on Virgin to NYC at the beginning of May to do the 5 Boroughs Bike Tour http://www.bikenewyork.org/
There's no charge on Virgin as long as you pack it properly and you don't go over 2 x 32kg in baggage. I have a huge DHB bag (although it is a bit big for my Pomp) which worked well. At a squeeze it goes in the trunk of yellow cab...which will cost you around $45 plus tip ($10) to mid/downtown manhattan. This is by far the best bet.
all true - I've done this several times, a normal bike bag fits into the trunk of a Crown Vic-type yellow cab, and some cabs are MPVs anyway.
Free on BA too. I use a rollable bike bag from Tifosi, £40 or so, non-padded though, so bring bubble wrap + put some clothes in the bag to pad it more (also the heavier the bag the less likely it will be thrown around)
I spent 3 weeks in NYC in march and took the Subway ZERO times, and cabs only to please young ladies.
