Fix it while you're there :)

Maybe ask on the nyc forums if someone will lend you a bike or let you hire from them?

Depending on the airline, you can probably take it with you for free. I don't think Ryanair flies to the US yet do they?

Invest in a bike bag, take off wheels, ecetrea. Bike is now luggage and does not require a seat of it's own.
Some airlines are more accommodating than others, all airports are crap so be prepared for a variable amount of agro. The amount of awkwardness encountered will be proportional to the superbly exhilarating feeling attained steaming across the Wialliamsburg bridge or the like..

BA carry your bike for free

I think I will be flying with Virgin. Ones the flights are confirmed I'll ring them upa nd try to get a written statement on how much it will cost and what I have to do.
From what I've been reading, as long as I remove pedals, chain and maybe handle bars and wrap all of the frame in bubble wrap then I'll be good to go.
Only problem then is how to get it to / from the airports. I could probably cycle to heathrow but given this is my first time in New York, i ain't gonna cycle with full lugage from Newark to Manhattan! Wonder if a taxi will take it, if i take the wheels off.
I'm getting kinda excited about having my own wheels over there now. Hope this pans out...

When i was in NYC about a year ago i just bought myself a beater at the start of my hols, then sold it at the end of the week - lost a bit of money on the deal but not as much as i would have spent if i hired for a week

Newark to Manhattan is about $40/50 depending on where and if it's packed neat the cab driver will be sweet. Hey this is the USA home of the can do attitude.

If you want to pack your frame, go to any cyclingshop and ask for a big cardboard box were they deliver bikes in.
-

It's hard to get the whole bike in the box, if you ride drops you may need to pack them in your trunk, you do have a trunk?

Even with the bars spun around or removed you can't fit it in a carboard bike box?

Hi,
New to the forum. I'll post more about myself in the right place when I get a few moments.
In response to the suggestion to take your own bike. I took mine on Virgin to NYC at the beginning of May to do the 5 Boroughs Bike Tour http://www.bikenewyork.org/
There's no charge on Virgin as long as you pack it properly and you don't go over 2 x 32kg in baggage. I have a huge DHB bag (although it is a bit big for my Pomp) which worked well. At a squeeze it goes in the trunk of yellow cab...which will cost you around $45 plus tip ($10) to mid/downtown manhattan. This is by far the best bet.
BTW if you're in the meat packing district...check out the Brass Monkey http://www.brassmonkeynyc.com Quality boozer run by some irish people. Great selection 20+ of beers on draft from the US and around the world. Not too expensive ($5 a pint) either.
Hope this helps

I guess it depends on the scoop of the bars, bike boxes are just cardboard boxes for frames, you still need to bubble wrap the frame and whatever else. You can get pretty cheap bike bags. I don't own a bike bag company yet but mine was a sound investment..

I should have added. You should definitely take/hire a bike. We had a f*ckin blast cycling through mid town traffic. Watch out for the potholes though...

Jimmy's right, you'll kick yourself in the eye if you don't get to ride..

Free on BA too. I use a rollable bike bag from Tifosi, £40 or so, non-padded though, so bring bubble wrap + put some clothes in the bag to pad it more (also the heavier the bag the less likely it will be thrown around)I spent 3 weeks in NYC in march and took the Subway ZERO times, and cabs only to please young ladies.

Damn y'all, you know I live here. What size bike and when ya coming?
Does anyone know anythign about hiring fixies? I can't think of anywhere in London that does it.
I am probably going to New York with work and really want to spin around on a fixed. Don't think my employers will pay for me to fly my Condor over there and I think it'd be cheaper to hire one when I'm there.
If not, I suppose I'll just have to hire a crappy hybrid with a rusty chain. Oh god, the pain.
