Invest in a bike bag, take off wheels, ecetrea. Bike is now luggage and does not require a seat of it's own.
Some airlines are more accommodating than others, all airports are crap so be prepared for a variable amount of agro. The amount of awkwardness encountered will be proportional to the superbly exhilarating feeling attained steaming across the Wialliamsburg bridge or the like..
