  • arup ...For me, when I am in a restaurant or cinema or whatever where lycra could look a bit odd, I just think to myself, "I've come out as a cyclist."...

I think you have hit the nail on the head. That is prob where the difference in attitude lies. Unless I am on a ride as in say this Southend ride (dam I hope I can get to that but I doute it) I tend just to be out at a pub / restaurant / whereever and just happend to cycle there rather than a cylist that has gone to the pub /restaurant / wherever..

  • just reread you post.

When you say come out as a cyclist do you mean like come out of the closet type thing.

    Say it loud.

    I'm a cyclist and proud!

    Type of thing?

  • TheBrick just reread you post.

    Type of thing?

Yeah, I guess. Motorcyclists are wandering around in their leather outfits in between trips. If I travel anywhere by bike then more than likely I'll be wearing lycra. So if I'm visiting clients then I'm clad in lycra too. It's extremely rare that anyone ever makes a comment or bats an eyelid.

Some people are taken aback in a restaurant especially if it's a bit posh or middle class. I almost never go to pubs so don't know what reaction I'd get there. The only time would be when I was on a ride around the village of Mountfitchet near Stansted, but they were very welcoming.

I think the public in general are a bit scathing of "cyclists". So it's kind of a public awareness thing as well. Two big issues at the moment, Global Climate Change and Obesity. Both of these can be thwarted by getting on yer bike. I'm not saying that you have to dress like me. I'm saying, "Look, here's another person that rides their bike". You can do it too. Get out of your car and on your bike.

So yeah, I'm proud of riding my bike.

  • Wearing 'lycra' is one of the reason that the public is a bit scathing about 'cyclists' in the first place, lets face it the 'biker' look has been cool for half a century or more, immortalised by Marlon Brando, anything 'cool' about being a cyclist is immediately destroyed by being able to see the outline of ones TODGER.

  • "..dancing around and wearing tight leasure,
if you look real close you can see my pleasure.."

Work in Soho or Brighton.. the outline of one's todger will get you loads of appreciation! :P

  • since i missed red dwarf, haveing not grown up in the uk, one of the best days in my life was when some freinds sat me down and we watched every episode ever made back to back, non-stop.

  • I hope they didn't make you watch series 7 and 8 (maybe 6 also) as they were rubbish. But that does sound like a great day.

I liked 6. 7 was waaay downhill but 8 came back a bit as Rimmer returned to the show.
