Sheldon says:
Italian headset threads are the same as British/ISO, except for the thread angle difference. They may be interchanged, but you should not go back-and-forth bewteen Italian and British/ISO headsets.

two main types iso / english and italian plus a variety of oddities plus a variety of tpi ( threads per inch ) for each quite a few combinations but most are
British thread, 1" x 24 TPI 26.4
forgive me if this is wrong but sheldons site is quite useful all the numbers and column headers are on his site so the below will make more sense
1" ISO Standard
(25.4 mm) 7/8"(22.2 mm) 26.4 mm 30.2 mm 24 This is the standard 1" size.see

The Italian and the British is the same diameters, near enough, but the threads are cut at a different angles, now if I have a nut and a bolt and the nut is threaded at a different angle to the bolt then it ain't going to work, it will go on wonky or it will strip the threads. However their are people on e-bay saying that Italian and British headsets are interchangable ....? maybe its me but I never understand a word of what that Sheldon rambles on about .
Anyone actually got an Italian headset on a British bike.

they will end up working loose i believe they might feel fine when you are tightening up the headset but very quickly the different diameteres tpi's etc will unmesh
