No, we just hate fixie riders.
Yes, it's cause it's hilly. Once you get past Staines, there's not a lot of flat road. It's not impossible to do it on a fixie, but given that there's a dead-line (sunrise), we feel it's preferable to have gears. Obviously, anyone is welcome, however.
