American online shops

  • Was curious - or lazy - does anyone know of any decent N. American on-line bike shops which ship to the UK at reasonable rates? Not for complete bikes, but for parts and stuff. I have no idea where to start looking, if anyone has had any experience with any let me know. Feel I should be taking of the exchange rates atm.

  • i have used beyond bikes but that was for mtb stuff

  • Any specific parts that can't be sourced here? Ebay?

  • Hippy - no just to make it cheaper. Seeing as stuff which costs 40 quid here usually costs 40$ there as well. So i'd being 20 for whatever it is + (ideally) say a tenner for the postage.

  • Watch out you don't get stung for duty. Factor that in when you work out costs.
I got stung duty with my HRM but it was still £60 cheaper than buying from Wiggle here. Most other stuff I order locally but not when there's a huge price difference in this case.
I'm still looking for a 'friend in a bike shop' to sort me out gear. :( I miss my LBS in Melbourne. Get this - he sent stuff HERE from Oz for nothing! I only mentioned I needed some new kit and a week later I've got a package from him.
Now THAT is what I call a bike shop! :D

  • I've ordered lots of stuff from http://www.nashbar.com (I get my ex to send it to me over here), but it all depends on what you're looking for.

Be aware that anything over £36 is subject to VAT. I get the stuff sent to my ex and have her remove all packaging etc. No probs so far..

  • I've found in the past that if the package has 'gift' written on it, it isn't subject to duty...

    Thanks for the suggestions btw.

but not too many companies are comfortable with doing that, and it doesnt always work, i got stung for my frame, if you say "bike parts" you don't get fucked i think?

  • You can browse for the TARIC code for whatever your buying here.

Once you know the code you can work out how much excise duty you will need to pay. Bear in mind that VAT is 17.5% on top of that.

  • Shipping from US to UK isn't that expensive, but if you buy from a shop they will probably mark it "as merchandise", which means you gonna have a nice surprise when the package arrives here...

  • i was thinking about that today, the people that own my house are american and go back every six months.i was thinking of asking them.does anyone think they could get away with bringing it back in their luggage??

  • they'll never fit a house in a suitcase....

  • I'm heading to New York and back a couple of times in the next few weeks so if anyone wants something (smallish) picked up from Trackstar I'd be willing to oblige... just don't ask me to bring back that San Rensho frame you saw on the Keirin Culture website!

  • Hey no worries. I'm leaving this Friday and will be there for a week then going again two weeks after I get back from the first trip... I'll be on the forum / email when I'm out there so just drop me a line and let me know.

  • thanks..

Unless it's labelled as gift, the charging threshold is actually £18 and not £36, and then the Post Office will add an extra 8 quid handling charge to process it.

100% correct - but i think the charge also depends in how much is the declared value...

(spent like 100 quid on the past week paying customs - americans are really dumb and doesn't know how to ship overseas!)

  • im moveign back to the usa soonish, would be wiling to pick stuff up at trackstar or orther places, and ship to people in the uk.
