2007-05-27 - Let's ride to Southend and then out into the sea

Im trying to arrange a long distance ride for the next bank holiday that is on monday 28th so on sunday would be nice to go for a long distance ride.
London to Brighton was amazing so lets do again, to another place now.
I suggest London to Cambridge because its to another direction, almost the same distance, if we don`t get lost its going to be 55 miles.
Hope someone else will find this idea good and lets go!!!

I love the idea of a tour of piers. Especially as Southend has a bloody long pier that we could ride out on.

what would happen then, would we ride there and trian back or ride both ways?
whats the pace like on these kind of rides? this is going to be my first long distance ride in ages so im not to sure what to expect...

Oh Essex, my beloved! My hometown is half way between london and southend on sea. I use to be in southend all the time when I was a skateboarder. The Pier is extremely long we could hold some comps there, sprints skids wheelies. I can promote it on fixedgearlondon. Do you guys want to make some t-shirts and spoke cards for it?

i'm in i think i'll go for freewheel if it's hilly coz in the LDN2Brighton i ripped a muscle in my leg at about the 55th mile, but if it's kinda flat i'll be FIXED

I'm in too - loved L2B and up for more of the same. If we follow the country village route a la the annual BHF London-2-Southend then it works out about 58 miles I think. Don't fancy crappy A roads the whole way. Will try post a suggested route tomorrow.

I'm interested.. could make change from weekly club run. Not sure about doing it on track bike though - I like my hydration..

40 miles isn't much at all. Fixed all the way.

We should be there pretty early, I'll work out whether there are any hills when I get access to my home computer (very late tonight).

We can hang out in Southend for the afternoon, having done the pier. If we bring locks this time we'll be able to actually go in pubs if the weather is shit ;)

Then some of us can ride back, some can hope a train home. Whatever people want to do.

We'll do another system like the L2B, no-one left behind, waiting for puncture repairs should they happen. But hopefully with a lot fewer stops so we don't spend the whole day waiting around.

Actually, I have an idea.. seatpost mounted bottle cages ala triathletes. That would solve the hydration issue. Now all I need is a new spine..

camelback or camelback bladder put inside your bag with the tube running along the strap, that's what i will bee using (if i go)

I've got a seat post mounted two-bottle thing on order with Cycle Fit. I believe it's there waiting to be picked up. It's certainly the way I intend to hydrate.

I've just ordered one of the saddle mounts.. will see how it goes.

It'll be my first time using the seat post thing, I've ordered it for the Dunwich Dynamo and hydration concerns for that. I think it will work really well. One of the guys on the L2B had one.
