pitfield street gets my vote, i live erm, 20 meters away..
the basketball court is always pretty busy mind, but i'm sure we could muscle the dudes off the court for half an hour.. we might even pick up a few recruits.. on nicked bikes ;) -

thanks rob, that video should be watched by everyone who wants to play. Sums it up really.
Adam and Doug are some of the best players in NY, amazing ball + bike control.GUYS IF YOU START PLAYING SOON I'LL BE WELL JEALOUS. My foot is still broken and I can't ride.
Oh well I can do the annoying referee.. -
• #43
I can't start that soon... I need a bike for the task first.

Wait what the hell happened to polo with Ross down on the south bank? That die already? Bums. PS: yeah Jon that is Fiona, she's a mad polo warrior.
As for mallets there are no not custom mallets so just build it for the bike you're playing on, even if it's a bmx (although i'd reccomend jacking up the seatpost a lot and getting the bars good and high for comfort.
The best mallets we've found in NY are made out of ski poles with 1.5 inch (3.81 cm for all you euros) pvc or gas pipe heads. You attach the pole to the head with a small bolt (predrilling eveything of course through the middle of the pole and the head. I'll post pictures later if ya want.

That's what I was gonna look into. Ross (brixton Cycles) was running polo on Sundays at a basketball court by Mint St, near Borough tube station. Not sure if it's still going or not though, but it could easily be resurrected there.

If you're genuinely interested in playing polo...You could of course, phone Herne Hill and ask if you could book the venue (reasonable rates) and use their existing polo specific bikes, malletts and balls??!!...there is even a pitch!
Disadvantages are:
- does not comply with the "I want to copy what New Yorkers do" nature of this forum
- there is no need to fetishistically spend a wad on building up a gleaming ultra-specialised bike that you will probably use only once or twice.
- Fantasy of members of the public (possibly female?) wandering by and proclaiming how cool you are is even less likely to happen ..........
some pics of HH polo bikes attached from last time we attempted to overhaul them, plus one image which will definitely clarify just how cool and underground bike polo is!!
Try this for kit: http://www.boxwoodbicyclepolo.com/index.htm

I am in the position as velocity boy, I think I will just get any old shit bike and knock up a suiside hub on it and then just leave it locked up at work to save space in the flat. Def up for this though.

It's not that I have any desire to copy what NYC riders get up, I don't.
I just prefer the idea of a DIY urban thing.
I don't class myself as an athlete of any kind (I tried road racing and learnt that lesson well enough, I may be zippy but I wouldn't even say I'm a good amateur), and for the same reason track racing isn't really for me, organised legit bike polo isn't either; I want a blast, with a beer or two, laughing, perhaps a beat box somewhere, something a bit dis-organised and messy.
To acknowledge the fact that we're just out for shits and giggles. To give up when we want, or play on for hours if it's going well, to hit a bar afterwards, and for it to be equidistant from everyone's home so more people are tempted by it.
