Bike help needed...

  • I'm kinda new here but wanted to ask the experts a quick question.

I have been running the original weineman callpiers on my mid 80's raleigh SS conversion. After spending most of my free time re-adjusting the bastards and following severalk near misses, I've decided to upgrade to some dual pivots. I got some 105s and prayed they'd have enough reach. But 49mm just isn't enough. Does anyone know of any other options??

I need another good few mm and don't know where I'm gonna get some!! Cheers all.

  • ah
    common problem.

I got some campag mirage from ebay which have that bit extra.

otherwise, you got long reach ones which all semm to cost a heck a lot more..
£30 odd smackers, but they will work so mcuh better.

    other option is bike jumbles..

  • you used to be able to get shimano 105 calipers in long reach version - think they're 57mm. Not sure if they're still in the current 105 gruppo. Try looking at the shimano site or asking at yr lbs maybe. Or as rpm said try a bike jumble if you need to do it on the cheap.

  • File down the insides of the brake (where the brake blocks go) so that they can move down a little bit more.....SOrry I', drunmk but I hope you get the idear.

  • I have a set of Shinamo 105 - I tried to fit them to a frame that had 27" wheels, used to have weinemann calipers. I'm sfraid they do not reach!! 57mm is not enough! the average Weinemann caliper reach is 63mm!

The only opetion is to go fixed wheel, and then change the front forks to 700c ones! No need for a back brake and you can run a 700c on the rear.

  • thank mate. i'll check them out.

i've found some tektro's that go to 57mm, but 40 quid a pop. eek!! it'll be worth it and i can take them with me to my next steel frame.

will keep web searching and see what i come up with.

  • Hi Elvis

    I used these

    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/src/00015/product-0-Alhonga-714-Dual-pivot-caliper-brakes--V-DEEP-drop-51-69mm--NUT-fitting--Front-and-Rear-79.htm

on a conversion for my girlfriend, they look quite moody but do the trick. Sheldon Brown has some tips about creating a drop down bar to give you extra reach, bit heath robinson.

Anyways up I have a spare Alhonga, They come in two’s, more than happy to swap it for a pint of beer.

If you take your front tyre off and measure from the centre of the break mounting hole to the rim this will tell you the drop depth you need. If it’s more than 69 your more than likely knackered.

  • You're fine to fit new brakes.

You want to investigate 650b stuff like the Tektro 810A sidepulls (which have 61-78mm reach).

    http://www.bikeparts.com/productinfo/Tektro-Sidepull-Brake61-78mm-reach-52715-89695.html

More info on 650b here: http://www.freewebs.com/650b/

Not suggesting you go 650b instead of 700c, just that the stuff built for 650b will solve your problem.

  • they might even be too much.

when I was looking I saw these ones

    available in longer reach

  • Drop plates my friend http://sheldonbrown.com/home-drop.html save your money. They can be made to look aot better than Sheldons. The problem with long drop brakes (even though I have one but it was free) is that you loose some mechanical advantage. You have a brake already, if you can't find some small bit of metal b&q or similar plus one bolt, some wasthers or other spaces for the lower section and drill four holes.

  • thanks for all the suggestions.

in the end, it seems that shimano, dia compe and tektro all do 57mm versions. found a fair few london shops sell them (evans, butler, brixton etc). ended up getting some trektros from my dad's local shop pearsons. got a pair for £35, not bad.

now, anyone want to buy a pair of 105's :)

  • I can remove both my rear wheel bolts but I can't shift my rear drive side hub, ergo I can't get my back wheel off. It's a bit rusty, but i'm not 100% per cent sure that's why it's not budging.. any suggestions, Evans man suggested a careful application of WD40 to the dropouts...??

  • I suggest a careful application of WD40 to the dropouts

  • i say hammer, but i dont really understand what your problem is the axel is stuck in the drop outs?

  • It was stuck, but not now, i whacked it out. but it's damn tight (snigger), is this normal for a track frame? The thread on the rear axle bolt thing has been filed down so that it (just) fits into the dropout. Again, is this normal?
Also, not very manly i know, but i want to get grease and general oomskah off my frame withouth ruining the paint and decals. What's the best stuff to use? Water, white spirits, water and soap??

  • Muc-off. You'll love it! or I used to use those little packets of carwash from petrol stations.
Or washing up liquid but the salts in it are not good apparently..
    Use saliva for ultimate bike-lurve.

  • 'spose I should have read the rest of the thread, but for future reference...
