  • maybe there should be a list of stuff they do discount? or do they have the same automated response of "Sorry, we don't give the discount on that as our margins are too tight."to every request for discount?

(in fairness to condor i did get a fiver off a pair of endura 3/4's as the poppers on the inner were coming apart)

  • I don't think it's a proper bike shop if they're not prepared at least to lend a pump and a spanner to people in need. Brixton Cycles always has at least one person tinkering outside, and Chamberlains (Kentish Town) lent me a spanner which saved me a 10 minute walk with a bike on my shoulder. I don't tend to go to chain shops too often (I once met Mr Evans and he gloated about how much the 7/7 bombings boosted his profits) but I've found Cycle Surgery up in Camden very helpful. They tapped on my crown race for free and also gave me a bunch of bits from their workshop for free because they didn't sell them as stock.

  • My LBS ain't so local any more.. sob sob

I need to get to Quest, they do a lot of the western roadie stuff but where else is there?

Evans suck. All the bikes shops out west are for kids or commuters. Condor are costly. Online ain't a bike shop... what to do? what to do?!

  • I live out in Kew Bridge. My LBS is an Evans on Chiswick High Road, but I frequent Cycle Fit in the West End far more often, or Sigma Sport down in Kingston. Both 10 mile rides really.

  • I'm working on Oxford St now so Cycle Fit isn't that far away. Soon to be Liverpool Street St. though.

  • hippy My LBS ain't so local any more.. sob sob

Is anyone on this forum from out west? Ealing Cycles have nothing for me.
I need to get to Quest, about 8k north of Ealing, as they do a lot of the western roadie stuff but where else is there?

i'm in ealing too, went out the other week after a lockring spanner, went ealing, chiswick, hammersmith not one was any good, i don't think there is a decent shop this side of london at all.

  • velocity boy Hubjub is amazing, Will was really cool about getting my drops to me in time for the Herne Hill sessions. He's friendly and always helpful.

everthing i have ordered off them, he puts in alittle note to see if everything is ok/delivered, nice guy

  • Hey Hippy if you are moving to Liverpool St. Cycle Surgery of Middlesex St are worth a look, or Brick lane is only a short stroll away.

There's nothing in the West. I live 10mins from Ealing Cycles and 15 from Evans in Chiswick High road. Both stores are cluless when asking for help on fixed gear.

  • Evans in Chiswick I didn't find so bad. The guys in there admire my bike and keep letting me use all their tools. I actually buy very little from them, but a great LBS is one that lends you any tool you want. It's more than any other Evans I've seen would've done, probably because the Chiswick one is so new and they're over-staffed because they're so quiet.

I get my fixie stuff from HubJub and echo everyone else's sentiments about him being cool. If only he'd move his operations to a store!!! :D

  • i know he's a good guy, maybe we should ask him....

Actually, they might've been the one Evans I had good service in. I was casing various bike shops around the area and they got me a spacer for my Mavic freehub. It wasn't the right one in the end but the fact was they had something I could try and they handed it over for nothing. Friendly too. Reminded me of my long, lost Croydon Cycle Works (in Oz, not the one just below London).

Do you still need a lockring spanner? Coz, if anyone needs bike tools, I have some.
Send me a message me or something. No guarantees of course but I might save you spending £10 on someting.

  • bought one last week from hubjub, thanks hippy though

  • did anyone get to the bottom of what was a decent lockring spanner?

I'm still using stillsons, but I don't want to fuck up my new s/h goldtec hub with EAI sprocket and dura-ace lockring

  • looking for a decent bike shop in west ldn ? then bicycle workshop in All Saints Rd, W11 are tops..

granted they have no high end bits, no clothing, erm, actually not a lot of gear at all.. but if you have a problem they are v happy to lend tools and can order a lot quality bits. but the main focus is they have really good mechanics too, they'll fix anything and i mean anything..

  • Whatever you do, Action Bikes on Chiswick High Road is not your man.
Funnily enough it's been Halfords on the same road that have always let me borrow their tools.

  • Cyclopaedia on Kensington High Street are pretty friendly. Again with the lack of anything you'd want to buy (nothing 1/8, terrible tubes and tyres, etc), but were very friendly and helpful when I suffered the humiliation of a puncture that one day I didn't carry spares.

  • RPM did anyone get to the bottom of what was a decent lockring spanner?

get a dura ace one from hubjub, it's the bollox
just bought myself a goltec wheel, a EAI sprocket and a dura ace lockring weird!!!!!
should get delivery on tues 8^)
save me from this siucide hub i'm tentatively riding at the mo.

  • snap!

scored an older goldtec rear off a mate for a £10 complete with two dura ace lockrings and a usable 17th cog.

replaced the bearings and have just finished building it up to an open pro.

ordered an EAI cog from Will yesterday, damn should have bunged the tool on the order to save postage!

  • is condor's website ever going to go live? is it ever going to be user friendly? will it ever have an updated stock list?

  • rear well - i got cpx22 with sapim spokes, hand built by harry rowland, from brick lane bikes.

    harry rowland is the don.

  • I expect he's also very busy!

unless he's got an army of wheelbuilding dwarves?

  • 'Morning All!
Thought I'd try to put the record straight regarding Condor.
I ordered a one-off Pista in April '07 and it came as promised 12 weeks later, I was kept informed on a regular basis by Adri and Grant, both calling and leaving messages to let me know about the progress.
Now, for those who know a little about hand-made products from Italy (and God knows I remember all the times I waited for Ducati parts when I still had an engine under my legs)... PATIENCE is what you need the most. It takes time. And that's it, 'nough said.
Now, about the aforementioned shop, every time I go there I don't notice anything different from any other shop in the City, business is business and if the shop is chock-a-block with punters it's obvious that staff will not have as much time as usual to give advice. And they won't bring you tea and scones. Go to Harrods for that!
But if you go there on a quiet day you can ask any of them and they will take time to answer and talk with you. Maybe too many people go there with ready-made negative vibes... "Tension brings tension"...
Well, anyway, so much for my opininon, I'm sure nobody will change their mind, just thought a little bit of fairness and positive attitude would do good.

PS: Has anyone specced-up a Pista with different wheels??? (Ksyrium or others...) Thanks!
