It'd be tight, should still fit though.
What did he measure with?

26.4mm is weird but not that weird. (ie http://www.sheldonbrown.com/seatpost-sizes.html
Seen Campy posts in this size as well as fair few NOS, 2nd hand and even new ones (St Johns Cycles has some in stock for example). I know Kalloy and others have cheapo posts in this size. But you'll have to be pretty patient to find something a little showy.

i wouldn't try and force a 26.8 in there, on my old bike i put a 27.2 in a 27 hole took ages of wiggling, probably won't get the bugger out.

I'm going to reverse on what I said... you could probably get it in, but I don't think I'd want to try. You'd never get the thing out later. That would matter to me.

Yeah the post in there at the moment is pretty tight, so im thinking it might be a .8.
I want something black, so i'll keep my eye out for something I guess. Annoying though, 'cos I just want one of those flash thompsons ;)
He measured it with... a seat post measuring thing. No idea what its called. Like a small cylindrical tool with notches in it which gets progressively wider as it reaches the top.

26.4 seatposts come up on ebay quite often, usually a bit cheaper too as so few people want them! Make sure you're searching worldwide, not just in the UK - and search for both 'seat post' and 'seatpost'. With any luck you'll find something like a nice old Campag one. Might take a few weeks seaching though.

I once put a 27.2 carbon fiber seat post in my 27 steel seat tube - it went in smoothly for the first 10cms, then a bit harder, then harder, then like an idiot I forced a bit more... and the thing would NOT move anymore.
Had to take the bike apart, hold the seatpost in a vice, and get my friend Ted (from fixedgearlondon.com) to use all his mechanical knowledge and muscles to swing the frame back and forth until it slid out. Almost impossible!
The carbon post was wrecked at the end. -

Get a shop to ream the seatpost out to 26.8, you'll have a lot more choice. I've done this, works a treat.

ok i tell you this...4mm doesnt seem much but it definately is...i thought the same way as you did up to the moment i was told that my beloved italian frame might have needed to go to a frame builder to get that 27.2 seatpost i hammered in out of it...tears came to my eyes and so i asked for some advice and.. well happy ending and lesson learned:
ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT SEATPOST FOR YOUR FRAME, IF IT DOESNT SLIDE THRUGH THEN YOU NEED ANOTHER ONE!
Compris?
so if you're really desperate you may be able to get one custom built by a frame builder possibly. -

Rattlebag - is that quite an easy thing to do then? Just ask for that anywhere and they can do it?

It was very easy for the shop that I got it done at (not in london sadly), I just dropped it off before I went to tesco and it ws done by the time I had finished shopping. This was at a very professional roadie shop though, my friend went in there once and asked if they sold trouser clips, they just laughed at her. I suppose it depends if your LBS has a reamer and knows how to use it.

Thread resurrection...
How snug should a seatpost be?
I need to replace a seatpost (in a 531 frame) the one that came out was marked 27 if I put it in without tightening it will slide all the way in without pushing and can be wobbled in the tube.
However I can grease and fit a 27.2 without forcing it at all.... any opinions on what to go with? Thanks
I measured my seat post tube yesterday, because i want a new seat post and have no idea what mine is. It was in brixton and the guy was surprised when it was 26.4. Was just having a look online for a new one, and 26.4mm seat posts don't actually seem to exist (well there are very few from what i have seen). Would a 26.8 seatpost be worth having a go with? 0.4mm doesn't seem like it would make that much difference.
