  • ... and not go down to Brick Lane Bikes at the weekend and buy a Lemond Filmore.

Cash is burning a hole in my pocket and need some reassurance that 5 weeks is not long to wait and spending the extra £££ will be worth it.

  • I love mine.

Buy whatever you want, but if I were you... I'd wait.

    Have you seen mine?

It's sex on a yellow stick.

  • I'm thinking about investing in Bob Jackson myself. How did you go about ordering it?

  • I've not ordered anything yet but if you google bob jackson details are on the web site.

  • Mine's custom.

Basically they're site is shite, but look at their colour palettes and pick a colour. You pay little bits more for more than a standard all over colour (I paid more for white trim on lugs).

Then I emailed them, told them I wanted a custom Pista. They wanted me to visit them for a fitting (they're in Leeds), I couldn't make it so I gave them measurements from a Cycle Fit fitting. Then I told them the customisations I wanted; 853 tubing, wrap-over seat stays, lug trims. They confirmed the price and time it would take.

I then heard nothing for a month. They're a bit slow at responding to emails too. It arrived at work... I smiled :)

Things I forgot to triple-check at the time but found out later:

    1. Threading of the bottom bracket - it should've been obvious, it's British.
    2. Fork width - 1" 1/8th.
    3. Stay spacing - 120mm.
  • velocity boy- Thanks for the info..

I already tried their website but got no response..

Might have to take a vist.

If they can do it it in five weeks then I might go on to invest. I really like the look of this..

  • the filmore is the best of the £400-£500 off the peg bikes (imho), wait and get the bob jackson.

  • I think I'm gonna go for the Bob Jackson, I guess if i pay for it when i order it then the money will not be burning a hole anymore, and it gives me 5 weeks to break the news to my girlfriend :-)

  • I want one too!

do the standard ones have threaded forks? I know david's is A-headset type, but I'd prefer the old fashioned 1" threaded as so many of them seem to be in the pictures..

also, anyone know, are the decals under clear coat? cos I'd want them off

  • Just ask for them not to put the decals on :)

  • that's too easy.

do you think a Bob Jackson is durable enough for everyday beating? I was thinking surly steamroller, but the BJ looks nicer and has better geo.

basically, just to hijack for a moment, I need a frame that is:

    cheap (ish)
tough enough to be used all the time as a work bike and a play bike
will be also used for the occasional Herne Hill session
can be made to look un-inviting to thieves as much as is reasonable

if the BJ's tubes ain't wafer thin then it's a winner

  • Actually, I've thought about it. And none of you should get a Bob Jackson. They're terrible bikes, can't handle the weather. Really uncomfortable. Non-standard thread on the bottom bracket, track ends only take some axles. You won't find a seat post for them either. And they look terrible.

(Trying to keep the numbers of Bob Jacksons down so I feel special.)
(Not special as in shoulder biter.)

  • I'm right in thinking that the Bob Jackson Pista/track bike is almost identical to a Mercian track bike - same steel, even the same lug design and logo on the forks. £480 for a Mercian track, how much for a Bob??

  • It's £350 For a custom Jackson frame (fork not included I don't think), which is basically the same as off the peg but a choice of colours and the geometry adjusted to you. You pay a lot more when you add other bits of customisation.

  • velocity boy And they look terrible.

especially in that horrible yellow colour they do!

heh, I'm gonna order at the end of the month (don't know why, I'm not a wage slave, it just sounds positive) it shall be black or poo-brown

    It's not finished yet!

Just you wait a week... I'll have my new wheels then. It will look lovely.

  • what are you getting!?

  • Phil Wood High Flange 32h laced to Mavic CXP 33's with Sapim CX Ray's. Radial lacing on the front wheel, hybrid 2-cross/radial on the rear wheel.

  • OMG WTF JHC etc..

    lucky git

  • I was at Putney Cycles the other day, they're starting to get more fixed gear bits and pieces in - the guy told me that they will be starting very soon to supply and build Bob Jackson frames to order

  • are you from round the SW parts then breadnbikes?
Lived in Putney for about 5 years, am in Barnes at the mo. used to go there to get my bike serviced (in the dark days of riding a mountain bike)

I've got some wheels I've just bought from the States that I need to build up and was wondering whether to go there. Was thinking of going to Holdsworths on the Lower Richmond Rd

  • Living in clapham north, previously balham/tooting for long time and before north side of the river...

Unfortunately!!!!!! cause of work, new job, I am moving to Maidenhead (what the ???) just as the bike sites are really starting to bring together some nice like minded people... I'm moving away... don't know about fixed gear riders in Maidenhead... I'm hoping to find some (any!)

I have to admit, I had my wheels (open pro/dura ace) built at Stratton Cycles in Wandsworth, and I can't fault the service! They are really nice guys, very friendly and too eager to help! A couple of old pro bike builders in charge there. They actually only charged me for the parts, threw in the labour for free!!!

They told me it used to be the original Claud Butler shop from the 20's and has been a bike shop since - bit of history for you there (hope it's true)

  • Hmm, sounds like another good option worth considering.
Won't be able to get anywhere 'til the weekend probably but can't wait to get 'em built up (white Deep V's / pink Phil Woods)

Oooh, Maidenhead… does ANYTHING happen there? :-P

  • slamm (white Deep V's / pink Phil Woods)

    pink? pink Sir !?

Bet you're just longin' for those hot summer days!!

Anyone out there know what this town has in store? Been in London 14 years now, gonna be a shock!
