How fast will you be going? WIll i able to keep up??
-
• #3
I'm not fit enough for that :(
-
• #4
It's fixed, it's a long way, I doubt anyone will be going fast, and with the weather as it is frequent stops for water and food would be advisable.
I don't think they're racing, more just going out for a long day. Bear in mind that quite a few of us have done 40 miles in a day just going to a pub on the other side of London and back (and getting very tipsy whilst there).
It's also a bank holiday weekend, so you have a day to recover.

Damn! Up having a lad's weekend in the Lake District that weekend. Oh well. I might be seeing them tonight, Andy said he's got some toeclips for me I'll report back if there are any updates.
P.s. They are all nutters, so don't expect a relaxed ride.

Maybe.

Andy says there should be about 50 people doing it!

Grr.r Why am I always away when these things happen!?! Sink few beers for me.
-
• #14
I would be up for this. I guess there will be a half-way pub stop.
-
• #15
I'd be up for this, how far is it?
-
• #16
60 miles, thereabouts. Depends on the route and the starting and end points.
-
• #17
Take about 3hrs ish?
-
• #18
sorry that was stoopid meant 4

Last time I did it, 3hrs 7mins. But that was geared, on closed roads, and practising rotation for considerable chunks of the distance.
First time I did it was 4hrs and 30mins. That was a few years ago on a hybrid.
In a pack of mixed abilities, riding fixed, stopping occasionally for water and pissing... round it out at 5hrs (average 12mph, which is around the regular speed of commuters, but this is a long distance and you may go fast on the flats but the hills will slow you down).
Not sure what will happen when the inevitable happens and the group splits. If we're all fixed, we'll all have different comfortable cadences and gear ratios and the group will find itself stretched pretty soon. There will also be those that take food and water enough to cope, and those who are just fitter and faster... I guess we'll have to figure it all out when it happens :)

ok i just found out about this ride, rreally wanna do it but i got some questions:
42x16 a bad idea?
standard Langster wheels also a bad idea?
padded shorts a good one?
one way or the other i will do it! -
• #25
70 inches is a good gear.
Langster wheels, can't think why they'd be a problem.
Padded shorts a very good idea.Bring fluids and food for the trip (especially if you're not used to distance - the trick is to hydrate often in small bits).
Make sure you bring basic puncture repair, tools, and stuff. Spare tubes plus air canisters at minimum. We're doing a practice thing on Wednesday night of 40 miles just to make sure people are comfortable with the kind of distance involved. Check the other thread and we'll work out the meeting place and time to suit everyone. It will be a evening/night training thing.
OK, so that was a bit of a mouthful.

So... who wants to ride fixed from London to Brighton on Sunday 6th May?
