It's the riders on gears who are cheating!
PS. If you've entered a hillclimb 10 miles from the nearest train station, and set off in a 39x20, try not to miss the appropriate train and end up having to ride to the event averaging about 130rpm. The sobering voice of experience...

51x20 (Campagnolo C-Record 165 X Phil Wood 20T = 1/8 Silence) Love it! Best for cruising around central London.
20 skid spots. More if you can skid with chocolate and alternate foot forward.
In my opinion, just my opinion, I like the look of bigger chainrings, similar to those on track racing bikes. Therefore I have to compensate with a big 20T rear sprocket for the street. More teeth, more drive contact, less wear.
Just got a Phil Wood 21T sprocket, seen a 22T, they're huge!
Alternatively I will run a 50x15 on the velodrome.

How much are those Phil sprockets? I just paid £20 for a 17T Condor one.

I'm paying about £25 for my Phil Wood sprocks... but this is duty and postage free as my wife brings them over from the US for me.

£20 should get you a nice EAI sprocket (17.50 from Hubjub for example). Don't know how much Brixton Cycles charges.
The Condor ones better be lovely if they're 20 quid.

I got a Condor, EAI, Formula, Miche, Andel.
The Condor looks good, smooth transistion over the teeth, really silent! 20 pounds well spent in my opionion
EAI is considered the best, tough and durable, but the Phils are also good, lovely and shiny. Although with the steel EAI and Phils the teeth have a angular bevel, so maybe a bit noiser.
Now we got the EAI Superstar Cogs tough durable lovely and shiny. Smoother transition over the teeth like the condor sprockets.
I would say this probably takes the crown at the moment.Want to get one of them, but they don't make them bigger than 18T.

Worse than me!
Did you do the same thing I did of calculating a nice cruise speed on a road bike and working out the gearing from that?
I've got the not-falling-over-whilst-weaving-through-traffic thing sorted now :) Took a while though, high gears do not lend themselves to tight weaving.

when I was riding behind you the other day David, your cadence was noticebly slower than the rest of us at the same speed.
Imagine when you get the fucker spinning though!

If anyone gives a crap, I'm loving the change to 44-17 from 46-17. It's definitely more suitable for spinning along and gets the HR that much higher whilst not trashing the legs so much.
I tend not to stand up as much to get going from lights and it's easier to put a bit more speed into the pedals to scoot over hills. Skids are easier although I killed a Rubino and swapped to a very soft and grippy Bontrager X Lite that's not so much fun. I use the brakes less now as it's easier to slow down with legs only. I'm still a roadie at heart though so brakes are my friend. Not much else to report 'cept it's SHINY and CLEAN for a damn change!!!

i think i may change my gear down, i've been riding 88 gear inches for a year now, and my knees feel fine, but it's effort at the lights!!! and i tackled highgate west hill the other day, ouch!

Snap. Its amazing when you don't have to slow down, you can really go fast. Starting from a standstill isn't the nicest, and nor is Denmark Hill. I like it, but I have been thinking of going down a few inches to make it a bit nicer through tight spots.
