IRO Hubs, anyone got a spare, er... nut thing

  • Riding through Hyde Park earlier, felt and heard something crack around the rear wheel.

So I stop and remove the wheel to have a look at the seat stays properly (not knowing what else might crack), and one of the axle nuts just fell off the bike, in two pieces!

That's the bit I lost, it's the inside nut that goes against the seat stay. It was literally in two pieces so I left it in a bin in Hyde Park. I flipped back to the free-wheel for the rest of the way home, being careful not to exert any significant pressure on the drive train for fear that the wheel would move.

All I've done for a quick fix is tighten the outer bolt down, so that the stay is now against the inside washer.

Is this part something that Condor would actually sell? Or is it a case of finding someone with an old hub and seeing if I can beg it off them?

  • Swear this is a known problem with IRO hubs. See this for lots of info:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=260588&highlight=iro+locknut (lots of linked threads in there).

Part has common threading so Condor should be able to either give you a replacement or something else that works.

  • they might well have one in the parts bin

but you should probably let the tension back off the nuts so as not to cold set the stays?

  • Yeah, that's answered it all quite comprehensively. I'll pop into Condor tomorrow. I tried Cyclopaedia in Kensington but they only have mountain bikes and commuter things in there and he didn't know if the locknuts were available on their own.

    Thanks for the advice :)

  • Had the same thing. I just screwed on something that sort of fitted, and of we went again.

  • Had the same thing happen to me this week with my front Gran Compe hub. The chromed spacer spilt at one point but not in two. Condor did not have a replacement but came up with similar sized nut that fitted. I'd like to get the proper spacer at some point if anyone does know a source?

  • I cant make it out from the image clearly, but it looks like the part your talking about is the locknut.

If you ride without it your cone will tighten up and grind your bearings.

  • Here is the chrome covered, busted spacer. The other bit is what I have in there now. It is too thin and needs a washer to even it out. Ideally I'd like to replace what I broke. Seems like a common thing so I wonder where I can get a relacement?

  • any LBS should have them..

I got one sent from Alf Webb cycles once, SJS probably have them..

  • thank the lord for search!
velocio: this just happened to me, did condor stock them? is it a simple "ah that'll fit"? if so i might not have to go on the tube tomorrow. and that will make me happy.

  • thanks Brixton cycles. i now have what pipwish has in their post. so SJS it is.

  • any bike shop with a box of 'bits' should have one somewhere, same thing happened to me a while back, quick rummage in a box of 'bits' at GBH and bingo fixed hub, for free...

Oh, do they do things for 'free' in Londons famous London...?

  • 45 pence. that's as good as free. it was for the beer fund. not the till. they said "ooh 50 pence".i opened my palm to reveal a shiny gold coin and the person serving me picked out 45 pence. winner.

  • ah bollocks. just got home. doesn't fit. another fucking day on the tube. wheel to shop.
frustration x 100 at not cycling.

  • Rubbish.... Watch out for the piggy flu on that there london tube thing....

  • i'm immune. i've got bad aids.

  • condor.ftw.

  • anyone know if these are available anywhere on the internet? i've broken one and replaced them with a locknut from a spare wheel, I'd like to know a proper source though.
