  • You know that thing, where you're riding fixed, cruising along, forget you're fixed, attempt to coast... and immediately get bucked by the bike.

Happened again last night, almost wiped out.

Still cannot get totally used to riding fixed, too used to single-speed now perhaps, or I just change bikes too often.

  • not really had that problem

except one time, bunny hopping a pothole. legs got jerked round on landing but it was just a bit uncomfortable for a split second.

there are things I can do on a freewheeled bike that I haven't tried on fixed yet.

  • First and last time I did this was after a couple of days riding fixed, when I was spinning out to beat a traffic light. Switching to SPDs solved the problem for good :)

  • Happened again this morning. I switch between single-speed and fixed far too often (road racing and training over Surrey Hills on a geared bike). So I got on the fixed this morning, ride down to Sainsbury's and on the way saw some red lights and try coasting up to them... just to shit myself as the bike almost threw me off again.

Lord knows how I look to car drivers when this happens, it's got to look messy as hell to see a cyclist riding along normally and then suddenly be spazzing out trying to stay on his bike!

  • it is for exactly this reason i don't switch much between free and fixed.

haven't bucked for a while, but i have hit quite a few walls on my freewheel ride with my legs spinning furiously backwards...

  • hah!
of course, the answer is to stay fixed

  • salmonchild:it is for exactly this reason i don't switch much between free and fixed. haven't bucked for a while, but i have hit quite a few walls on my freewheel ride with my legs spinning furiously backwards...

LOL, the few times I ride gears when I am recovering from injury etc when I get to the end of my road I normally do the mad spinning back thing :)

  • Hmm.. I don't seem to have so much of a problem. I did it once when I started riding fixed again in London and went to coast over a pot hole.. minor buck, and once again more recently when I'd been riding the roadie while the fix was out of action and I just kinda forgot I was fixed for a second. Again, it was only a minor reminder. It actually felt MORE odd when I went from fixed to free and coasted for the first time.. very odd sensation!

  • Yeah, that coasting thing is very unnerving - the first few times I feel hyper-sensitized to the click of the pawls. Thankfully, I usually forget to coast whilst riding gears :-)

A friend lent his fixed to a mate (under duress) to go and buy more wine from the offie. The bloke was adamant that he could handle it (booze talking) went to jump off a kerb, and promptly landed in a puddle of red wine and blood... with a broken wrist.

I notice most first timers try to coast at low speed within the first few yards, particularly if trying to clip-in.

  • Mine's always when slowing. Attempting to coast to a stop, that's always when I forget. I never feel it when I start or cruise... just when I stop.

  • I go back and forth between SS and FG and i seem to adjust to each immediately. i suppose both have different riding styles. i'm definitely more agressive on SS. but i'm faster on FG.

  • I'm damn fast on SS, somewhat reckless too. On FG I just cruise more, admire the sights and such.

  • Mine have been at speed when a pot hole has 'appeared out of nowhere' :)
There's a split second hesitation when I get off the saddle and try to coast, small 'notice' from the bike and carry on as if nothing happened.
I'm not even sure anyone could see it to be honest - it happens so fast it's like I'm just adjusting where my arse is or something.

  • It used to happen to me too, when I switched bikes. After a while, it stopped, as if I could feel wich bike I was wearing.

  • whooaaaghhhh, a dredge from the past eh?

I find the opposite. When I (very rarely) get on my road bike all feels fine till I slow down, then whooaaaghhhh NO CONTROL!!!

Only takes a while to get back in the swing of using brakes, but blimey it's a bit scary at first

  • Braaaaaaaaaaaains! (Zombie thread)

My first experience of speedbumps on a fixie was fucking hilarious (in retrospect).

  • I find the feeling that Ian (conker) said more common, on a bike with a freewheel I sometimes get a wee bit confused after first getting on. Saying this, at about 3am during the dun run I was thinking "oh I wish I had a freewheel..." and I think my legs got the wrong hint and tried to coast. The bucking sure did wake me up.

  • Selfishly I thought this was going to be a thread about me as it's my birthday...

    I am dissapoint.

  • Happy birthday G :)

  • Hpy bthdy bckro!
