I'd thought about reading that but scared that it would freak me out too much

I've been seeking comfort in The Lord of The Rings by JRR Tolkien.

Also read this, which was excellent

I only got about a third of the way through before I gave up.
Depressingly violent, just a spiral of doom for me.

They destroy the One Ring in the end and everyone apart from Frodo lives happily ever after
