Why do I bother finding nice bikes for mates when clearly what they need is more locks..

not pictured, but there was another bike on the next stand where the lock was through the frame but missed the stand entirely.

I think the most frequent cause of this sort of thing is lorry drivers turning or manoeuvring.

Sounds like a truck got somewhere it shouldn't and in extracting itself this was the damage, so you're spot on.
