• A simplified strategy: replace the forum software. Software like Discourse is performant and includes all of the features that are required to run a forum like this. Switching to Discourse would cut the overheads (person hours, financial) down to very little. The time investment required is a few days: write a script to import into Discourse, set up redirects for previous URLs.

    1. Write a script to import data from this software to Discourse
    2. Set up a server in a friendly jurisdiction using recommended Discourse configuration (DigitalOcean offer a one-click Discourse server)

The ongoing cost for this method is under $50 per month.

  • If the alternative is ending up with the community scattering or significantly reduced and limping along on Discord then this doesn't seem like an awful idea to me.

The main issue right now appears finding a group able to manage the Microcosm software & infrastructure. That's understanding as it's a huge undertaking & many of us are unable to guarantee our time now, in a year, in five years.

It would be a sad end for the community to be lost due to an inability to find a committed group able to provide the time to both manage the infrastructure and continue to develop the software.

While I'm a huge fan of the software, LFGSS was great before Microcosm came about & could continue to be without it. The people are the most important part.
