Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and a waxing crescent moon all on view for January.

I saw the most incredible meteor last night around 7pm, roughly in the direction of Mars. Part of the Quadrantid shower, which might still be visible tonight.

How are you getting on with your kit, have you tested it all out yet?

Love it all and getting very comfortable with it.
The big inconvenience is London light pollution and lack of garden.
I went out yesterday, 2h drive to find a good place to stargaze and then it's so cold and I'm so tired that I only stayed out for 4 hours and got back at 2am a bit scared of driving in icy conditions.
So I need to find a place to rent at very sorry notice or something so that I can crash over and not have to drive.
All the right equipment, but the wrong place to have the equipment.

That doesn't sound ideal, Airbnb? I'm sure you'll figure it out, looking forward to seeing some images!

Yeah, might need to buy a house to go with a field.
Currently looking at a few places and comparing to a light pollution map.

We have pretty good skies here but I still haven't been out to a really dark place to see what results I can get in more ideal conditions. In fact, just talking about it here I realise I know the perfect spot on top of a mountain nearby.
The problem is drumming up the motivation to do that after a long day at work.

The problem is drumming up the motivation to do that after a long day at work.
I have the motivation to go drive somewhere, and the equipment is always packed... I'm even OK staying out for a number of hours in the cold.
Where it fails is when it's early hours of the morning, it's very cold, and I am very tired, and now have to drive a couple of hours home... I don't like this, I'm not comfortable driving when tired especially when the roads might be icy.
That's the bit I need to solve, not having to drive home at 2am when I'm already shattered.

^this was one of the good things about moving from SE23 to HP18 - the dark skies are a 20 second walk from a warm duvet.

Has anyone removed the IR filter of a canon 350d as I was thinking if getting in to astro photography. Or at least learning the skill of removing the filter.

Been at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich for
An Evening with the Stars tonight. Started at with a planetarium show, which was really cool; then messing around with some Telescopes in the courtyard observing Jupiter and 4 moons, Mars and Saturn; before having a tour around and talk about the Get Equatorial Telescope.Felt like a big kid, but got to press the buttons that moved the dome around!
