  • Disc brakes on a road bike - is 160mm enough?

When I last bought a road bike discs were not a thing.
I've always had discs on MTBs and always run dinner plates (I had 200mm on QR at some point and didn't die)

Eyeing up a new bike and 160 seems to be standard across the board.
Is it possible to add a spacer and run 180s? (at least up front)
    Or is it unnecessary?

  • Hope RX4+ Calipers let you go up a disc size bit even as a fat bloke on a touring bike 🚲 ve rarely needed more than 160mm.
As a fat bloke on a gravel bike 🚲 have a 180mm front cos I can

  • unnecessary

160 front, 140 rear is plenty

  • 180 on a road fork will make it flex and judder, IME

  • I'm 70kg ish run 180 front for polo on 2 pots caliper, never felt wanting for more.

That said I'm gonna give 4 pot a go just to see how much I can push it before braking.

160 is plenty IMO for road bikes but YMMV, give different combination a go and decide which is best for you.

    Yes.

    Or is it unnecessary?

    Also yes.
