When there are multiple operators on a line there are sometimes discount operator-specific tickets to tempt people away from the normal fare, which the operator would only get a fraction of. They usually only bother with the London termini, because there’s usually not a choice of operator from other stations.
London-Cambridge and London-Brighton has the same bollocks.
Why is it more expensive to go from Harrow & Wealdstone to Milton Keynes than from Euston to Milton Keynes, which is the stop before Harrow & Wealdstone?
They're penalising train wankers that choose not to travel into London?
