Altnabreac railway station, situated in a remote area of Caithness,
Scotland, has been at the center of an access dispute that led to its
temporary closure in November 2023. The conflict arose between the
station's neighboring residents and railway authorities, primarily
over access rights for maintenance work.

    Background

In 2021, Ian Appleby and Liz Howe purchased the property adjacent to
Altnabreac station. Subsequently, disputes emerged regarding access to
the station for essential maintenance. ScotRail reported being unable
to perform critical upkeep due to safety concerns stemming from
restricted access, leading to the station's closure to passengers on
    November 12, 2023.

    Developments

In October 2023, Ian Appleby was arrested for allegedly obstructing
railway operations, though the case was later dropped due to
insufficient evidence. The couple denied allegations of obstructing
access, asserting that they were being unfairly targeted.

Efforts to resolve the dispute included plans to construct an
alternative footpath to allow railway staff access without crossing
the couple's property. By August 2024, reports indicated that the
station was expected to reopen following the completion of the new
    access route and necessary maintenance.

    Current Status

As of December 2024, Altnabreac station has reopened, and services
    have resumed.
The resolution of the access dispute has restored this
remote station's connectivity, benefiting both local residents and
    visitors to the area.

  • Hello rhb - Having checked on the National Rail website minutes ago - they are still reporting that the station remains closed. Any thoughts please? Thanks.

  • Seems like AI pulled the last fact out of nowhere as you can't get a ticket to the station.

Chances are unlikely for it to reopen, before Jan 9th at the very earliest. As that's the next scheduled court date.

The Station would then require all the damage to be repaired and the "request to stop" upgrades installed as planned.
