It is vegan. I made it for Christmas a couple of years ago and it went down well.

Last year I did Seitan, which I liked but my wife wasn't so keen.

For an unusual (to Brits) dessert that has the kind of richness that is traditional at Christmas, I can recommend Carrot Halwa. Healthier than it tastes, if you see what I mean.

We're going for a nut roast recipe my wife found online - will make it the day before so can concentrate on all the accoutrements on the day.

The ones I have been looking at are similar but used soaked cashews and then agar agar and other agents to help lighten the texture.

How did this one turn out?

The texture is very paté-like (from distant memory), not too heavy though. As, described on the link, it has a strong earthiness from the mushrooms which works for me!

I finally made it to Mildred's (the one in Dalston). It was pretty good! Not sure I'd make the trip from South East again though and if I'm in the area, House of Momo is cheaper and I prefer it. It was absolutely dead in there so a bit of a weird atmosphere and we were in and out in about 30 minutes so should probably give it another go at some point.
