+1 for Wunjo, I like it in there.

I'd second this. Went there for a browse, ended up buying something but not before I'd tried stacks of guitars. When I narrowed it down to two, they let me try them both out in the vintage amps room too. On several different amps.

thank you guitar people - really helpful suggestions.
@RonAsheton - no he doesn't really need another guitar and in fact he hasn't even asked for one. he's generally anti-consumption so avoids needlessly accumulating or replacing things (unlike me). the ones you linked look lovely.
i think that he might enjoy a different guitar though, and it would bring another element to his playing and gigs. he / his band plays indie influenced slightly folky rock. also does acoustic stuff.

Has anybody got/tried a Tech 21 Fly Rig of any sort?
I always DI my Tele for the duo I'm in, and the combination of my home-made six-pedal board (trem, reverb, delay, tuner, OD, boost) with hefty Voodoo Lab power brick plus a Session JD10 preamp on top of aaaall the cables is really starting to get to my back (I'm public transport only for gigs).
I reckon a Fly Rig 5 with its onboard Blonde-style Sansamp section plus an outboard trem and some dirt could save me nearly 4lb. But I don't know if it does Fender amp-sounding cleans that are really luvverly enough.

Continuing to obsess over minutiae while the world burns, or because of the world burning, I am having a change of heart. I suspect the Tech 21 will be ooookaaay in some departments but it likely comes with baked-in not-so-goods such as fiddly knobs, shit distortion and a useless tuner, and I'd probably miss my reverb/delay/trem no end.
So: current rig weighs 4.4kg, but changing the stupidly hefty ply board to slatted pine might save 400g. Swapping the PP2+ for a Harley Benton PSU gets 500g back, dumping the basically unused overdrive saves 200g, losing the JD10 for say a Joyo American Sound gets maybe 350g. So 4.4kg becomes 3kg at the cost of £100 or so ... whereas a used Fly Rig plus a new HB PSU but retaining my trem and tuner would possibly sound worse, cost probably £250-300 or maybe more, and though smaller, it would still weigh 2.2kg.
Tl:dr maybe just, y'know, lighten some components.

The weight weenys have reached the guitar thread! 🤣🙏
I thought I saw some kind of very clever all-in-one thing that plugged straight into the PA a little while ago, will have a dig. Otherwise how about a bunch of micro Chibson pedals on a micro Chibson board?
-
• #15634
I nearly started a Weight Weenies x Guit Nerds thread specially.
Were you thinking of the Origin Effects Deluxe 61? 'Cos I was... £385 mind...
Trying to find micro FX that sound good can get expensive fast as well. A Mooer Trelicopter might be good. MXR Carbon Copy Mini too. But it really begins to go all a bit £££.

• #15635
I was going to say, the MXR mini pedals are good quality, the Sugar Drive is a nice klon-style overdrive.

Just get a Kemper! 😋

On my personal guitar x ww journey, I’ve been having a great time with the Terror Stamp I picked up from Sheppz. It has fully replaced my Tiny Terror lunchbox head, so that’s one bag gone from my setup.
I don’t know if I could ever manage with a pedalboard made up of mini enclosures though. I stamp the wrong things all the time as it is

Weight Weenies guitar builds... now there's an idea...
"Thinking about removing the first 9 frets to further reduce weight as I won't be using this guitar for chords..."

Considering a little valve amp for home/recording that can be switched between outputs. Anyone used the Blackstar HT 5R mkIII combo? Better alternatives?
-
• #15640
I've got the MkII and it's been great, reliable, decent sound and features. etc. I like it. I'd probably not bother with the reverb, though, and use a pedal instead. Haven't used it for recording, mind. But there are emulated outputs (1x12 and 4x12 cabs) on the MkII.

• #15641
Inca highly recommended the harley Benton tube15. Managed to get one lightly used for <£100. The reverb is weak though 😄
-
• #15642
Have you used the USB C output to connect to a DAW ?
-
• #15643
I didn't know they made amps. They make really good cheap guitars I hear.
-
• #15644
No, the MkII doesn't have one.
-
• #15645
Tube15 is apparently great for the price (except the reverb, natch). I've got one of the HB Teles and it's brilliant. Really rate it and even more so when you consider it was £129 brand new.

@RonAsheton you still digging the AC4TV? There's one near me for £120, could be an option. No direct recording niceness though
I regret selling my beige tolex/red and green basket weave AC30 in the early 2000's

Had an AC4TV for years and absolutely loved it, fairly voxy but with a strong bratty tweed character to my ears. I ended up adding the AC4C1 to the collection as was curious to compare an the C1 ended up being the one that stayed as ultimately it suited what I wanted better (ie a cleanish/slight breakup chimey base to place pedals in front of). @Dooks-Fatberg is now the proud owner of the TV and I do miss it for those fuzzy OD tones but couldn't justify keeping both!
I do also have an AC30/6 that needs some attention from an amp doctor and since getting a Torpedo Captor I keep telling myself I really need to get it sorted out as I can finally enjoy it in the comfort of my home!

• #15648
AC4C1. Is that the Blue one with Top Boost?
-
• #15649
I sold it to a mate who needed it/deserved it more than I did. Lovely little amp, maybe a little bit too dirty for me. Can't believe I'm saying that, but there you go. 🙃
Hi, my name is Ron and I'm an ampoholic. Matchy, matchy!

Noice!
I think I'll get the Blackstar for recording, which is my head choice, but my heart loves Vox!
Wunjo's are really relaxed and you can pick up pretty much any guitar and have a go. They don't stock Gibson/Epiphone though, aside from the odd second hand one, so that might be a factor, but at least you have other stores nearby.
In general, Denmark st is good from the low pressure POV as they're clearly used to having tourists and perusers drop by with no real intent to buy but I've always found the Wunjo's staff to be really friendly and helpful if you need them to be.
What style of music is he into and what does his band play? As @RonAsheton says, a Squier Jazzmaster can be a very capable guitar, so maybe also worth looking into pedals/amps?
