The Bird Thread

I like jays, but never seem to see many anymore. I think I've seen 1 all year and never anywhere in the South East, then coming back from the school run saw one fly out of neighbour's hedge, straight across me and into the tree opposite our house.

I’m seeing loads right now, probably due to the leaves being off the trees and them being more visible, seen 3 today already, 2 out the window and one while popping to the shops.
Do have mature oaks outside the window and a view of a wooded nature reserve so obviously prime habitat for them.

I'm down the hill from @Mr_Smyth and we got one in our garden regularly.

saw a greater spotted woodpecker on a quick ride yesterday, I love those dudes

see Jays quite often in the woods round the Chilterns

Not any oak nearby, nearest are on the common half a mile away I'd say.

On another note, saw a blue tit in the garden also on Friday, not seen one in my garden on the 4 years I've been here (did the great bird survey thing on January and didn't see a single bird in the hour I watched!).

My attempt at filming at our feeder didn't go as planned. Sounded cool though!

You must live somewhere with high density housing? Fake grass out back and 3 cars per house on the concrete front ‘garden’ ?

It'll be interesting to see whether they'll keep coming or whether they'll share the news effectively.

Don't know if parakeets do but pigeons keep coming back.

Nope. 3 bed semi in suburban Surrey. The village has farms to the west and south, the north is a large common/heath area. No fake grass, my front garden is surrounded by hedges on 3 sides. Gardens to left, right and rear all have trees, bushes, hedges. Opposite my house is a green, about 20m x 40m with about 5 large trees on it.

Probably less sqM of green here (SE19) wonder what’s behind the lack of certain birds?

Brown big bit of gold/yellow on the back bird of prey in Dulwich woods yesterday. Whatbthenhell could it be? Hawkish rather than falcony.

The hobby would have left for sunnier climes so sparrowhawk or kestrel?
The male peregrine is fair bit smaller than the female but they are usually flying over rather than in the woods unless eating.
There are little and short eared owls sighted not far away but no idea if they are in Dulwich woods.

Def not a kestrel this was a big fucker (or appeared it as it flew in front of me about 4 m away). It really made the parakeets agitated.

You often are buzzards on the ground, red kites too.
