Not sure what your idea of aesthetically unpleasing clearance is but 10-12mm is pretty standard for bikes that are ridden. The idea is not only to block water but also to channel away any objects that your tire picks up - which is the reason why the gap at ingress should be slightly smaller than the one at egress.
Front one's gone no problem, I can't remember what size PDW fenders I got, but there numbering system makes no sense, I think I've got 45s, I know there have a stated max clearance of 35mm tires. I've got 38mm tires on there which blow up more like 41mm and there still a near comical / aesthetically unpleasing amount of clearance.
Going to have a little rest before trying the rear.
