  • For the 'style' conscious amoung us I do love the Adidas Velosamba shoes, super stiff sole (which is perfect for the tiny platform of the eggbeaters I swear by) but comfy/smart enough to wear to the pub. In fact I purposely ride into town and meet the kids and wife at the park to get a ride in and I can also have a kick about when I get there. Really versatile shoes.

  • You’re spot on. The flats I occasionally swap on and off the bike have a very different stack height than the SPDs/shoes combo I use. If for more than a ride to the park, I need to adjust saddle height. The fore-aft has never been an issue for me, but height for sure. Cleat position, combined height of pedal/cleat/shoe, type of flat pedals, thickness of shoe sole, etc., all contribute.

I tend to position myself based on what ‘feels right’ for pedaling. Seems to work OK for me.

  • I was running DEORE XT Flat Pedals PD-M8140 for about a year, right hand side snapped going up as per usual commute hill :/
The internal spindle is pretty thin, think these pedals are crap!
Posting here because if anyone gets same problem the way to remove the bits stuck inside is HEAT!

  • What is the flat pedal equivalent to the shimano m520?

Other half needs something flat for city/touring & bit of gravel, no shin piercing pins, short/rounded pins maybe OK. Happy to spend a little for reliable/longevity.

XLC seem to offer some well liked models?!

  • I recently bought at set of MKS Allways and they are really nice pedals with sealed bearings and the pins are not sharp.
I have been running MKS Lambda for a very long time as well, which are very nice pedals as well. They come with reflectors which is nice (and required by law here in Denmark)
Both can be had at either SJS Cycles or Freshtripe.

Thanks, these seem to tick every box.

  • Any recommendations for something that pairs nicely with Restrap diagonal straps?

  • My set came new with the right axle slightly bent. As I spin the pedal onto the crank arm with an allen key I can see/feel the pedal body oscillate a bit. Not so good for a part boasting the XT mark

  • MKS Allways

big thumbs up for these, were exactly what I was looking for and great feedback

  • What flat pedals would look ok on a road bike? I've only ever used fairly chunky MTB ones on flat bar bikes but reckon they'd look out of proportion on a road bike

  • What kind of road bike? Big tube carbon or slender tube steel - or something inbetween..?
For classic-ish steel something like the MKS Sylvan Gordito or Lambda could work

  • Was thinking about Gordito for my latest project (1950s 3speed Flying scot) but the amount of grip they’d offer concerned me. They don’t look great.

Edit: I mean aesthetically they do look great, right on the money but grip wise they don’t look great.

  • I agree that is part of the reason I haven't bought a set, even though they are on sale at danish shop..

I have a set of MKS Allways, which are very nice, if a touch on the narrow side for my feet/singlespeeding

Pretzel is the diecast full width version of the Lambda/Gamma, though I'm not entirely convinced of the aesthetics

  • I considered the Gamma over the Lambda because of the pins but yeah, not sure of the looks. I have several sets of the Nukeproof plastic ones and think I’ll just go with them for my build. While they are way too modern they are fairly slim so suit the svelteness of the rest of the bike and dark coloured so won’t stick out too much I hope. Plus, you can’t see them while you’re riding and neither can anyone else really.

I put XC iii on my recent Rockhopper project, really an esthetician driven choice. They seem fairly grippy but definitely not on the level of the Nukeproofs so it’ll be interesting to see how they do once I get the chance to do some off roading on that bike and feet are all wet and muddy etc.

  • I bought a set of nylon Crankbrothers Stamp on clearance that I am eager to try on the atb when no mudguard riding is viable again - pins on those are 2-3 times longer than anything else I've ridden, so I'm worried they'll just chew up the soles of my shoes.

I have a set of Lambda that are around 8-10 years old by now - and for casual and gravel riding, I haven't lacked grip, even without the pins.

  • MKS Allways

    +1

As a flat pedal only person, these are by far the nicest flat pedals I've used.

The Race Face Chester's are my second fav.

  • This is for a Dolan Preffisio so somewhere in between. It's a pretty agricultural bike so I'm not going to be spoiling any aesthetics. Just looking for something in proportion, and that I might end up using on other nicer bikes in the future.

Something from MKS looks to do the trick. Leaning towards the Allways

  • Just googled the Preffisio and I think the Allways would be a good fit.

  • Favorite shoe as of this year with foot retention, Vans Slip Ons, but they fall apart quick. My first pair outlived my second pair (bottoms fell out). I use Cons low tops for lace up stuff. Need to find a brand with a sturdier slip on but the sameish dimensions, feel, not looking for a bulky, or heavily padded, thick sole slip on.

  • The pro skate vans slips last much longer.
Other brands make skate slip-ons as well (nike, NB, adidas) but I haven't tried them. Loved state shoes slip-ons but they went bust.

  • I've recently discovered MKS rmx pedals, they're cheap and great for city bikes and pootling. Not a huge mtb platform but much more comfy than Sylvans or similar

  • Does anyone knows what are the widest flat pedals available that can also be rebuild?

  • I had exactly the same happen to my Shimano flat pedals. After 10.000km or so though.

  • I have three pairs of Large Stamp 7. They're something like 110mm wide. I have also rebuilt two of them with their spares kit. One of the pairs is Stamp 1 which is kinda serviceable but doesn't use the same kit so I've not done any work to it.

  • I really like burgtec flats and have them on most of my bikes MK4 and 5's
