Some of the most enjoyable mince pies are cheap shit ones IMO, bonus pints for icing-topped supermarket own brand.
Serious question, one of my mates (he's Sri Lankan and lives in Hounslow) told me I'm not allowed to say boss man anymore because it's considered rude.. is that a thing?! (Accidental racism is not my vibe)

tried at 2pm yesterday at DK, unsurprisingly sold out. Back again at 9 this morning and they’re all gone already! Apparently someone came and nabbed the lot.
Ended up with this instead. Contains last years Christmas pudding, high hopes

I've always associated boss man with casual racism mainly because I grew up with family members calling anyone foreign who works in a takeaway boss man and I knew those family members were racist. Never seen them call a white guy boss man.

Yes, I've known people to refer to someone as "a bossman" based purely on appearance, not even in a shop, just on the street.

I liked these but as I'd eaten like 7 mince pies on that day I need to try it again to be sure!

How much are we talking here?

So many people in Dalston call all shop owners boss man and that's across race but yeah the optics are BAD when you say it like that.

Obviously this is problematic, I was only questioning the in shop scenario. This is not good.

£2 a pie, which I guess isn't that bad for you fancy London people, but I'm a thrifty northerner these days

It's certainly a London price but they sound good. And just around the corner :) cheers

Mini mince pies available at my work canteen. Small but very tasty, one of the best I've had in years. And all the better for being only 55p each... 😎

Some good points made here about mince pies as social currency:
Can't help but be reminded of the hamburger motif in this old meme though:

They look banging, especially considering what work canteens usually pump out

I'm definitely not using boss man in a casual racism way but happy to stop using it if that's the way it's perceived.
I've always seen it as a term of deference to an authority figure - owner of a shop - in the same way I call most brown men older than me uncle, often just to wind them up if they're obviously a similar age or younger than me

Aforementioned Dusty Knuckle mince pie loose lid. This one wasn't connected at all, came right off. Not what you expect at that price point.

Many apologies for assuming you were a fancy Londoner

I didn't have any problems with the DK lids, maybe it was a bad batch?
They were good - nice chunky mincemeat - but I would agree that the filling is better than the pastry which is quite thin. I'm not sure that's bad in itself though, it would be boring if all pies had thick pastry.

If you do like thick pastry, Wild Grains (on the industrial estate off Blackhorse Lane) is good. I had this on the 8th so can't remember enough for a proper review, but IIRC the mincemeat was very good and the pastry speaks for itself. Can't remember what they cost but prices are normally very good there too.

Just realised I could fit Wild Grains into a run and do a literal mince pie run but no more time for runs before we leave for Christmas. Dammit.

Are we allowed to talk yule logs in this thread? I have sampled the Lidl and Aldi efforts so far which both have merit but I don't want to offend sensibilities...

I have a box of 12 vegan Konditor mince pies being delivered tomorrow.. v.excited.
Went to Chocolatine mid way through a long run yesterday and nabbed one of theirs. 10/10 for me. Pastry was literally perfect, no granulated bullshit on the lid and a humungous amount of filling that was spot on. £2 seemed absolutely worth it. Will head back.
